Two wins to end the season

Sunday, April 25th, 2010

Toolstation League premier division: Wellington 1, Calne Town 0.

WELLINGTON ended their season with an odd-goal victory over relegated Calne Town yesterday – their second win in three days.
After their heroics at Ilfracombe when they beat third in the league, they had to grind  out a result in a dour match not helped by the bumpy Playing Field pitch.
Calne, who have slumped to bottom of the table, should have gone ahead after 27 minutes when Dan King was sent racing clear but shot wide with only keeper Steve Johns to beat.
The only goal of the game arrived six minutes before half-time and capped a man-of-the-match performance by Scott Holland, who has revelled in his unaccustomed midfield role.
Skipper Simon Ingram swung over a free-kick, which was knocked down to Holland and he calmly lifted the ball into the roof of the net.
The second half was a scrappy affair with Calne keeper Steve Allison doing well to keep out efforts from sub Luke Perry and Levi Marlow.
The visitors were determined to leave the division in style and Wellington were indebted to Johns for a pair of fine saves from Aaron Hopkins and Mark Dolman.
Wellington: Steve Johns, Ashley Gaines, Martin White, Greg Jackson, Jack Adams, Levi Marlow, Simon Ingram, David Thorne, Scott Holland, Shane Kingston, Dan Thompson. Substitutes: Luke Perry (used), Warren Patmore (not used). Attendance:  65.

BIDEFORD clinched the premier division title yesterday when they won 2-0 at Corsham while nearest rivals Willand could only manage a goalless draw at Longwell Green.

Brilliant win at Ilfracombe

Friday, April 23rd, 2010

Toolstation League Premier Division: Ilfracombe Town 1, Wellington 3.

WELLINGTON ended a run of four straight defeats with an excellent victory at third-placed Ilfracombe last night.

Warren Patmore’s side, still without a number of key players, gave their best performance for some time and thoroughly deserved victory against a side containing their former striker Leon Taswell and coached by ex-boss Dave Sheehan.

The visitors, playing their third game in six days, went in front on 18 minutes when Shane Kingston fed the dangerous Dan Thompson and his pull-back was turned in by Simon Ingram.

Wellington doubled their advantage soon after when Ingram’s corner was headed in by centre-back Adam Fricker.

Ilfracombe reduced the deficit before the interval when Shaun Lewis, who had an effort saved by Steve Johns with the score goalless, rounded the Wellington keeper to net.

Ilfracombe enjoyed lots of possession after the interval but, apart from a couple of goalmouth scrambles and shots from distance, Wellington looked comfortable.

And they sealed victory in the dying moments when Scott Holland looped a fine header over keeper Steve Oliver from Ingram’s free-kick.

Wellington: Steve Johns, Eubio do Rosario, Jack Adams, Adam Fricker, Greg Jackson, Scott Holland, Dan Thompson, Simon Ingram, Sam Bryant, Shane Kingston, Martin White.

WELLINGTON end the season with a home game against Calne Town tomorrow (Saturday, 3pm).

Welly avoid the drop

Wednesday, April 21st, 2010

Toolstation League Premier Division: Street 3, Wellington 0.

WELLINGTON will be playing premier division football again next season despite their poor end to the current campaign.
They went into last night’s match at Street needing a point to ensure their survival and, although they suffered a fourth straight defeat, other results went their way to mean they will definitely avoid the drop.
Wellington were again forced to field a makeshift side at Street but gave a good account of themselves in the first half. They were undone by a pair of goals either side of half-time – both of which saw the visiting defenders appealing in vain for offside.
Street went ahead three minutes before the break as the ball was played through to the dangerous Aaron Lomax, who made no mistake.
And they doubled their advantage five minutes into the second half with an equally clinical finish by Kye Palmer.
It was Palmer who sealed the points on the hour when he curled a low shot past keeper Steve Johns.
Wellington, who welcomed skipper Simon Ingram back into the side, were unlucky not to pull a goal back as the hard-working Scott Holland saw an effort cleared off the line.
Wellington are away to Ilfracombe tomorrow (Thursday) night and complete their season with a home game against Calne Town on Saturday (3pm).

Third defeat on the trot

Sunday, April 18th, 2010

Toolstation League premier division: Radstock Town 4, Wellington 0.

A NIGHTMARE start to the second half consigned Wellington to their third successive defeat and boosted Radstock’s hopes of premier division survival yesterday.

Wellington’s patched up side – again missing a string of key players – had fought well in the first half to keep the scoreline goalless.

But they came out after the break and were stunned by three goals in four remarkable minutes to virtually end the game.

Radstock went ahead when Jack Metcalfe’s lob was headed off the line by visiting defender Jack Adams only for the referee’s assistant to rule the ball had crossed the line.

Almost immediately the home side increased their lead as a speculative cross from George Pawley sailed over everyone and into the net off the far post.

Things turned from bad to worse for shellshocked Wellington as Liam Watson was sent clear and, although keeper Will Radford blocked, Pawley’s brother Tom was left with a simple tap-in.

To their credit, Wellington kept going but they conceded a fourth goal midway through the second half when Tom Pawley burst forward on his own from midfield and produced a clinical finish to beat Radford.

Wellington finish their season with away games at Street on Tuesday and Ilfracombe on Thursday before entertaining Calne Town on Saturday.

Home defeat by Larkhall

Sunday, April 11th, 2010

Toolstation League premier division: Wellington 0, Larkhall Athletic 1.

WELLINGTON went down to a disappointing defeat by Larkhall Athletic at the Playing Field yesterday.

The visitors from Bath created all the openings of the scrappy first half with Johnny Davoile shooting straight at keeper Steve Johns and both Ross Lye and Lee Bowen firing just over.

But they made the breakthrough six minutes after the break with what was to prove to be the winning goal.

Ricky Scott fired in a low drive, which Johns could only parry out to Bowen, who scored at the second attempt despite a valiant effort by the keeper.

Wellington left it late to create their only efforts on goal and both of them could have snatched a point.

With eight minutes remaining, Greg Jackson found Scott Holland in the box but the skipper’s first-time shot was blocked by keeper Owen Dunn and, shortly afterwards, Levi Marlow headed over from a great position.

Willand do the double

Wednesday, April 7th, 2010

Toolstation League Premier Division: Wellington 0, Willand Rovers 2

WELLINGTON conceded the double to their high-riding neighbours from Willand at the Playing Field on Easter Monday.
Willand, who are managed by former Wellington player Clive Jones, are having an excellent season and are still in with an outside chance of pipping Bideford for the title. They were on top for most of the game against a Wellington side missing a string of key players through injury.
The visitors almost went ahead in the second minute as Joel Hawes raced clear but was denied by keeper Will Radford.
But they did take the lead two minutes later when Russell Jee sent over a cross from the left and Dean Stamp turned the ball into the net off the underside of the bar. To their credit, Wellington refused to lie down but Willand increased their lead on the half-hour as a corner was headed across goal by Stamp and nodded home by Ben Mammola.
Wellington felt they should have got back into the game just before half-time but were denied a penalty after Scott Holland had been sent flying in the box.
Willand bossed the second half and Radford did well to deny Danny Jee before a free-kick from Wellington old boy Paul Pocock was deflected on to the bar.
Wellington: Will Radford, Greg Jackson, Adam Fricker, Ricky Davey, Jack Adams, Levi Marlow, David Thorne, John Bradford, Dan Thompson, Scott Holland, Shane Kingston. Subs: Neil Vogwill, Jon Stanyard and Oli Nott (all used). Att: 90.

WELLINGTON’S league match at Ilfracombe on Good Friday was called off because of a waterlogged pitch and has been rearranged for Thursday, April 22.

Ilfracombe game off

Friday, April 2nd, 2010

HEAVY rain decimated the Good Friday sporting programme as Easter turned into a washout.

There was scheduled to be a full programme of Toolstation League matches but only five games had survived by 2pm.

Among the casualties was Wellington‘s trip to Ilfracombe in the premier division.

The cancellations will mean more problems for clubs already struggling to fit in all of their fixtures before the end of the season.

On Easter Monday, Wellington host neighbours Willand Rovers (3pm) .
