Wellington Midweek XI 101-8 Sampford Peverell Midweek XI 105-4

Thursday, June 2nd, 2011

Wellington Midweek XI slipped to a disappointing six wicket defeat at home to Sampford Peverell last Thursday evening when their batting did not really fire in this 20/20 match.

Wellington opted to bat first on a warm evening, but were never able to get on top of an accurate Peverell attack; Franks with 2-19 and Radley with 2-6 applied good control with the ball for their side as only Aks Latifi with 14 and Mark Saunders with 16 got going for Wellington; the Red and Blacks effort was saved by Julian Jones and Adrian Lee adding 43 for the ninth wicket as they played with spirit – Jones top scored for Wellington with 29no and Lee hit a crisp 21no as three figures were posted off the last ball of the home side’s innings.

Sampford Peverell were into their stride quickly as Pitkin and Coles had 29 on the board before Julian Jones and Adrian Lee combined twice through Jones taking two good catches to give Lee 2-15.

Max Capaldi marked his return to Wellington action with 1-22 and there was a wicket for Tom Baycock, but Peverell won with over five overs to spare and consigned Wellington to a first midweek 20/20 defeat of 2011.

Wellington Midweek XI 128-5 Newington 99

Saturday, May 28th, 2011

Wellington Midweek XI made it two 20/20 wins in two evenings when they posted a 29 run win over Kent tourists Newington last Friday evening; choosing to bat first Marc Holloway lost his opening partner in the second over, but he and Rob Moysey were not to be put off by this matter as they added 76 for Wellington’s second wicket in good time with Holloway making a fine 37.

Moysey cracked 63 as Newington’s bowling became wayward and he profited from this, Paul Short’s quick 18no at the end for Wellington propelled the Red and Blacks to 128-5 in 20 overs.

Wellington bowled and fielded very well with Will Hinchcliffe’s left arm over medium pace getting rid of both openers; as the innings developed Richard Short and Sam Murdock with four wickets each were most effective for Wellington as was Sam Baycock with his three outfield catches and Wellington won with an over to spare.

Mallards 126 Wellington Midweek XI 127-7

Friday, May 27th, 2011

Wellington Midweek XI started their programme of evening 20/20 matches with local and not so local opposition at home last Thursday evening when they overcame a poor start to record a three wicket win over Mallards.

Mallards opted to bat first and found James Bath with his brisk left arm round medium pace and Thom Trott’s quick off spin hard to cope with as Trott with 3-7 reduced the Taunton side to 39-4, but through their skipper Liddle with 25 and Vaughan with 26 a fifth wicket stand of 43 came about and Mallards had come back into the game.

Wickets for Sam Baycock, Matt Weaver and Sam Murdock kept the visitors in check late on and the excellent 4-14 returned by Rob Moysey saw that Mallards were all out for 120 in their full 20 overs; Julian Jones with two great boundary catches shone in what was a decent Wellington fielding effort as Aks Latifi with a stumping and skipper Marc Holloway got on the card too.

Julian Jones and Luke Desave got Wellington through the first over with Desave hitting a good boundary, but three wickets in the second over set the Red and Blacks back.

James Bath and Jones got the score to 20 before Jones was caught in the covers and the equation was in favour of Mallards, but James Bath and Thom Trott rose to the task as they added 84 excellent fifth wicket runs, Bath made a capital 44 with four fours and more importantly plenty of good running between the wickets that gave Wellington the energy to win.

Trott lashed 44no with two big sixes and he had the experience to guide Wellington home with ten balls to spare; although 104-4 became 115-7 Sam Murdock gave Trott great support to see his side over the line and to a three wicket win and the team then moved on to host Kent tourists Newington the following evening.

The Long Hop bar, membership, and you

Sunday, March 20th, 2011

Everyone should be well aware of the bar we set up last summer, a good number of you have used it quite a bit already!  Over the winter/spring some improvements have been made ready for the new season and we hope to see everyone enjoying the cricket and making use of the new facilities.

As part of our license, we can only sell alcohol to members of the club, or people with the travelling opposition.  This means that anyone in the club wishing to buy alcohol from the bar must be a fully paid up member.  This is why we have a new social membership level for supporters who do not play but it also means players have to pay their membership as well.

Please read my post about membership costs for 2011 and make sure you are paid up before you try and buy a drink…

We will be issuing membership cards to people once they have paid and you may be asked to produce this card when buying alcohol.

Change to membership fees

Sunday, March 20th, 2011

Membership fees have been relatively stable for a number of years. In order to fund development in the club, we are looking to change our subscription fees and make use of our Community Amateur Sports Club (CASC) status to bring in more money without any additional cost to members.

As a CASC, we can claim Gift Aid on donations from UK tax payers who have signed an appropriate form. As an example, this makes a £20 donation worth £25 to the club.

Donations can take various forms and we are looking at ways we can make use of it to help fund the changes that you have no doubt noticed happening to the club.

For 2011 we will be trialling a change to our membership fees that we hope will be supported.

Fees will be as follows:
Senior players: £10
Junior players: £20 (includes all junior match fees)
Social members: £5

We will also be asking senior player over 18 to make a voluntary donation of £20 and to sign a Gift Aid form if they are eligible. This donation is optional and will not affect membership in any way.

We hope players will support the club and see the extra value which can be used to improve facilities available to all. In 2010 senior membership was £30, in 2011 a senior player paying their £10 membership fee, and donating £20 will pay the same as 2010, but the club will receive £5 more through the Gift Aid scheme.

Multiply this extra £5 by the number of senior members we have and the club could make an extra £200 a year to be used to improve the club and its facilities.

You can download and print off membership forms and Gift Aid declarations from the Forms and Documents page of the WCC web site.

If you have any questions or suggestions, please speak to Adrian Lee or Marc Holloway.

Running Club
A fun way for us to get fit for the season.

Get a group of people together who want to run the streets of Wellington on an evening during late March and early April.

Mark “Forrest Gump” Salter knows some good routes! I have spoken to a fitness instructor at the Princess Royal and he is happy for us to attend circuit training as a group as well.

This year is an important year for the club as the new bar and focus on the ground comes true; however lets not change the Club’s stance towards cricket which has always been to play the highest level possible.

The 2nd XI are newly promoted and will be a hard season and the 1st XI really need to show consistency to get promoted.

All the of the above aims to move us forward.
