Ashbrittle Midweek XI 117-7 Wellington Midweek XI 119-9
Wellington Midweek XI took the visit of their Ashbrittle counterparts down to the last over and their last wicket standing last Thursday evening, but when team vice-captain Oli Beale struck a four to win the Red and Blacks had completed the ‘social double’ over the Ashes in what was a great game of cricket in front of a large crowd of spectators who enjoyed another dose of great summer weather.
Mark White won the toss and opted to bat and saw Andy Hill and Rob Dubery put on 34 good opening wicket runs for the Ashes before both were dismissed on this score as Will Derrick induced Dubery to play on and Hill was caught off of Tyler Fyfe.
Harry Venner-Woodcock and Arthur Burns-Cox were the best of the Ashes batting from there on as they made 29 and 31 respectively with Wellington’s attack bowling well too.
Oli Beale got some really good turn from the dry surface as he took 2-36 with the other wickets been shared out at a rate of one apiece to those who were successful with the ball and a fine Miles Cave run out completing matters saw that Wellington would need 118 to win ahead of being able to enjoy a BBQ that had been laid on for all to take part in.
Wellington were reduced to 14-2 as Callum White struck, but Red and Blacks skipper Jack Beal was on hand to deal with matters as he smacked 39 with four sixes; indeed his first two scoring shots were sixes and when combined with Ben Evett’s rapid 24 things were looking up for Wellington, but a wobble was still to take place as Gavin Dawes took 3-22 to make Wellington 98-7, but Oli Beale’s cool head saw the home side home with those at the other end doing their roles well as victory was achieved with four balls to spare and that made the after match eating all the better; thanks go to Amanda Moysey, Ali Campbell, Sharon Frost and Chloe for their excellent work in keeping everyone fed and watered.
