Brompton Ralph 109-9 Wellington Midweek XI 108-8

Thursday, June 30th, 2011

Wellington lost their latest midweek evening 20/20 match by just one run to West Somerset League side Brompton Ralph last Thursday when skipper Marc Holloway was spectacularly caught off the last ball of the innings needing one to tie and two to win.

Brompton had got into a bit of tangle batting first as George Hooper took a wicket in the first over of the match, one of two for the medium pacer; also taking two wickets for Wellington were Max Capaldi, Sam Baycock and Sam Murdock as Brompton limped to 77-8, but a ninth wicket stand of 25 between Escott and Cruikshank saw the total Wellington would require was to be of a three figure magnitude.

Simon Rudd took a late wicket and held on to a fine boundary catch too.

After a rocky start of their own Wellington got going through Rob Moysey and Thom Trott with a 25 run offering for the third wicket, but this was ended when Trott was trapped LBW for 11 and at 30-4 Wellington needed something special with the bat; Moysey and Sam Murdock added a cracking 46 runs for the Red and Blacks fifth wicket and this was so nearly the platform for a home win, but Murdock was run out for 10 and Moysey was bowled for a fine 54 and so pressure was on for the last over of the game with eight needed to win and Marc Holloway and Simon Rudd at the crease; six came from the first five balls of the over and so it was one to tie and two to win for Wellington, but Holloway was caught at mid wicket to leave his side agonisingly short.

The team are away to Sampford Peverell on Thursday 7th July for another 20/20 match.

Wellington Midweek XI 161-4 Mallards 141-2

Thursday, June 23rd, 2011

Wellington Midweek XI made it a 20/20 double over Mallards this season when the Taunton based side made a second visit this season to Courtland Road and were edged out by 20 runs on a pleasant sunny evening last Thursday.

Wellington lost a wicket early, but a fine 79 run second wicket stand between Max Capaldi and Scott Davey made in good time saw the Red and Blacks take command in the game – Capaldi made a fine 54 with two sixes and Davey a confident 26.

Although both were dismissed within four runs of each other Alex Sparks with 52no saw Wellington to an impressive 161-4 in 20 overs.

For Mallards their opener Stanley made 35no in 20 overs – a good knock, but one that was not fast enough for the shorter game.

Keitch made a fine 60no batting at number four as Simon Rudd and Rob Moysey took the wickets to fall for Wellington.

Wellington Midweek XI 127-5 Nynehead 128-7

Wednesday, June 22nd, 2011

Alex Sparks confirmed he is back in the Wellington area after his time in Manchester as he took Nynehead to a three wicket win with an over to spare in this 20/20 match last Tuesday evening.

He smote 97no out of a total of 128-7 made in 19 overs as he timed the ball well, but also hit it with awesome power too.

Earlier Marc Holloway with 44 and Sam Murdock with 45 had given Wellington a great start with a stand of 67 and Kevin Crout and Max Capaldi saw the Red and Blacks through to 127-5 in 20 overs.

Nynehead were in trouble at 61-7 as wickets were shared around the Wellington attack; Scott Davey with 3-2 did well, but Sparks, who plays for both Clubs contesting this match, had other ideas and made an imperious knock.

With him in this form and available for Wellington once more the signs are good.
