Seconds come out second again

Wellington 2nd team paid their first visit to new comers Taunton School on Monday evening. Unfortunately the result was not the one required. Mike Broom at no.1 had a surprisingly easy win due to his opponent suffering from a muscle strain. Mike won 9-1,9-2, 9-0. Phil Hobbs at no.2 had a hard fought battle with his opposite number. Phil was soon down 2-0 but pulled a game back in the third. The fourth game was very close but Phil lost it 9-10 to lose 3-1. Brian Davenport at no.3 is still far from comfortable with his game and against an awkward opponent who managed to get a racket to almost everything, Brian lost 4-9, 4-9, 6-9. Roger Mason played at no. 4 this week standing in for the absent James Luard. Roger got off to a good start but then games went both ways as the match reached 2-2. Roger came out for the fifth in determined mood and quickly built up a five point lead. This was slowly eroded but Roger managed to keep his nerve and won the game 9-4 to secure a 3-2 win. As with last week the match now rested in the hands of Phil Griffith. Phil won the first game 9-7 but was struggling to come to terms with the high lob serves onto his backhand. The next two games both reached 8-8 with Phil unfortunately losing out 8-10 and 8-9. Phil was unable to rally round and lost the fourth game 5-9.
The final match score was Wellington 2nd 8 Taunton School 14.
