We now have forums!

March 27th, 2007

I’ve set up some forums for general chit chat on the site now. Goto www.sportinwellington.co.uk/forum to access them.

You’ll need to be registered on the site and logged in to participate.

There are forums for Cricket, Football, Golf and ‘General’ at the moment. I’ll add the other clubs if required, please contact me if you’d like any added.

There are likely to be other (bigger) changes to the site over the next few weeks. Nothing should be lost, everything that’s on the site at the moment will get carried over, but there should be some improvements, a change of look perhaps, and maybe some other new things.

Bouncing back

February 28th, 2007

Toolstation League Division 1:
Wellington 4, Clevedon United 1
WELLINGTON bounced back from four straight defeats with a convincing victory over Clevedon United at the Playing Field last Saturday.
Strikers Nick Woon and Shaun Anthony bagged two goals apiece as they gave a much-improved performance to get back on course for their target on a top-six finish.
Wellington started brightly and Anthony blasted over in the eighth minute before putting them ahead five minutes later. Receiving a pass from Tim Legg, he neatly skipped past a defender before drilling a shot low under keeper Mark Selway.
Wellington always looked in charge but chances were few and far between in the rest of a scrappy first half, which was not helped by the heavy pitch.
Indeed, they had to wait until midway through the second half to increase their lead in controversial circumstances.
Simon Ingram’s cross was knocked back by Anthony to Andy Butler, whose goal-bound shot was turned in off the thigh of Woon with Clevedon protesting vehemently that the skipper was offside when be provided the final touch.
But they could have no complaints about Wellington’s third goal with ten minutes remaining as Craig Herrod was released on the left and his fine cross was headed home by Woon for his 21st goal of another productive season.
By now, Wellington were in complete control against a Clevedon side who failed to trouble keeper Shaun Locke throughout the 90 minutes.
And it was no surprise when they made it 4-0 right on the final whistle – with the visitors again calling in vain for an offside flag as Woon was sent racing up the right. This time, he turned from scorer to provider and cut inside before crossing to Anthony, who rolled a low shot under the unfortunate Selway.
Manager Kevin Evans must have been pleased with his side’s overall performance – and particularly the clean sheet kept by the re-shaped defence at the centre of which Scott Holland and Trevor Haslett were rock solid.
Wellington: Locke, Legg, Haslett, Holland, Short, Mawford, Ingram, Butler, Herrod, Woon, Anthony. Subs: Atiba, Elsley and Jackson (all used). Match sponsor: Roger Nunn Driving Services.
l TRURO City lost for the first time in the league this season on Saturday when they went down 2-1 at home to Larkhall Athletic. The only points they had previously dropped came in a 1-1 draw at Wellington.
The defeat also ended a run of 23 straight wins.

Another home defeat

February 16th, 2007

Wellington 1, Bradford Town 2
WELLINGTON completed a miserable week with defeat at home to lowly Bradford Town at the Playing Field on Saturday, February 10.
The result came on the back of the shock 2-0 midweek reverse to bottom club Weston St Johns as their club record 12-game unbeaten run became a distant memory.
Wellington went into the Bradford game missing four key players through either injury or suspension but still did enough to suggest they were going to get back to winning ways as they controlled the first half.
They outplayed the visitors for most of the half, taking the lead with a goal of stunning simplicity midway through the half.
Simon Ingram floated a free-kick into the area and Shaun Anthony knocked the ball across goal for skipper Nick Woon to calmly finish for his 19th goal of yet another prolific season.
But Bradford threatened briefly before the break with striker Steve Roddy being denied by keeper Shaun Locke – a sign of things to come.
After the interval it was a different story as Wellington failed to mount a single serious effort on the visiting goal – one long-range shot by Woon was comfortably dealt with by keeper Stuart Powell.
At the other end, Bradford equalised seven minutes after the restart when they were awarded a free-kick 25 yards out and Roddy curled the ball up and over the wall and in off the post.
Wellington huffed and puffed in an effort to regain their lead but it was the visitors, who scored the all important goal with 19 minutes remaining.
Wellington gave away possession and the ball was played forward quickly with sub Mark Robinson sending Roddy racing clear to round Locke and score what proved to be the winner.
Man-of-the-match Roddy proved a handful all afternoon and Locke produced three more saves to deny him a deserved hat-trick.
Wellington: Locke, Burne, Short, Holland, Markham, Blenkinsop, Ingram, Mawford, Herrod, Woon, Anthony. Substitutes, Nott and Jackson (both used), Bryant (not used). Match sponsor: Tim Potter Butchers.

Beaten by bottom club

February 1st, 2007

WELLINGTON suffered a shock 2-0 defeat at home to bottom club Weston St Johns in the Toolstation League's division one.

Kevin Evans' side gave a disappointing display against the club he managed last season and could have no complaints about the final result.

The visitors went ahead after 32 minutes when Wellington allowed a cross to bounce in the area and Lee Ludwell headed past keeper Shaun Locke.

The home side thought they had equalised before the break when Craig Herrod got the ball into the net but his effort was ruled out for a foul.

And to rub salt into their wounds, St Johns added a killer second goal on the break through Ross McNab with six minutes remaining.

Wellington will be looking to bounce back from the defeat when they entertain Bradford Town at the Playing Field on Saturday (3.00).

Out of the cup

January 25th, 2007

WELLINGTON'S 12-match unbeaten run was ended last night (Wednesday) when they went down 2-0 at home to Toolstation Premier side Welton Rovers in the second round of the Les Phillips Cup.

The hosts gave a good account of themselves against the higher division side in the opening period but lost out to a double strike midway through the second half.

Wellington thought they gone ahead after three minutes when Nick Woon's header cannoned off the underside of the bar but the referee ruled the ball had not crossed the line.

And although Welton were the better side, Wellington created the clearer openings in the first half with Craig Mawford and Simon Ingram both going close.

Welton took the game to Wellington after the break and went ahead after 72 minutes with a header by Liam Fussell.

And they sewed up the win five minutes later with a second goal by Leon Simpson.

This Saturday, Wellington are without a game but entertain Weston St John in the league next Wednesday (Jan 31), 7.45pm kick-off.

Meanwhile, Toolstation Premier Division outfit Bristol Manor Farm have given Wellington seven day's notice of approach for defender Karl Baggaley.

And now it’s up into third …

January 25th, 2007

Toolstation League Division 1: Wellington 4, Elmore 1.

STRIKER Shaun Anthony bagged a hat-trick as Wellington extended their unbeaten run to a dozen games – and moved up into third place in the last Saturday.

Anthony's treble made him the second player to perform the feat in four days after leading scorer Nick Woon – suspended against Elmore – also hit three in the midweek win over Minehead.

But Wellington's latest victory in a remarkable run was tainted by a serious injury to talented young defender Tim Legg, whose jaw was broken in two places in an accidental goalmouth collision.

Both sides struggled to contend with a fierce cross-pitch wind early on before Wellington – whose line-up included new signing Karl Madge – went ahead after 19 minutes as Anthony rose unchallenged at the near post to head home a Simon Ingram corner.

And, as they got into their stride, a flowing move ended with Craig Herrod being brought down in the box after 34 minutes and Anthony stepped up to coolly covert the resulting penalty.

Almost immediately, Elmore had their own appeals for a penalty turned down when Richard Blake crashed to the ground as he blasted over while, at the other end, Ingram almost made it three as his inswinging corner was headed out from under the bar.

Wellington made a sluggish start to the second half and Elmore pulled a goal back five minutes after the re-start as substitute Brett Worbey scored with a looping header.

Although the Tiverton outfit refused to lie down, it was always the home side who looked more likely to add to their tally.

They restored their two-goal advantage midway through the half as substitute Greg Blenkinsop released Legg and his pinpoint cross found Anthony to complete his hat-trick.

Despite the injury to Legg, which is expected to end his season, Wellington stuck to their task and went close three times in the dying minutes before Craig Mawford scored a cracking fourth in stoppage time.

Wellington: Locke, Legg, Baggaley, Holland, Short, Mawford, Butler, Ingram, Herrod, Anthony, Madge. Subs: Blenkinsop, Elsley and Markham (all used). Match sponsor: Barclays.

Up into fourth

January 25th, 2007

Toolstation League Division 1: Wellington 4, Minehead 1.

WELLINGTON moved up to fourth in the table and extended their unbeaten run to 11 games following victory at home to Minehead on January 10th.

Prolific striker Nick Woon hit a hat-trick for Kev Evans' side but the score was a little harsh on a young Blues side who took a shock lead through Chris Duffy on 27 seconds.

It took Wellington just eight minutes to level as Shaun Anthony's free-kick cannoned against the bar and Craig Herrod followed up to score.

The hosts grabbed the lead two minutes before the interval when Craig Mawford's cross was knocked down by Anthony for skipper Nick Woon to score.

After the break, Minehead belied their lowly league position going close to equalising on three occasions.

But, each time, they were denied by Wellington's young keeper Shaun Locke who produced three great stops to keep his side in front.

Wellington repaid their keeper's heroics by extending the lead on 66 minutes when Woon netted his second from a Simon Ingram free kick.

The result was put beyond doubt with four minutes left when Herrod was brought down in the box and Woon scored from the spot to complete his hat-trick.

Back to winning ways

January 1st, 2007

DESPITE atrocious conditions, Wellington got back to winning ways by beating Longwell Green 3-1 at the Playing Field.

On a rain-sodden pitch, Wellington took an early lead through Craig Herrod, who also went close on two other occasions in the first half.

After the break, the weather got worse but Wellington added further goals through Daniel Short and Nick Woon before Longwell Green scored a late consolation goal.
