FA Cup defeat

Monday, August 30th, 2010

FA Cup preliminary round: Wellington 0, Bodmin Town 3.

WELLINGTON bowed out of the FA Cup when they were beaten by Bodmin from the South West Peninsular League yesterday.

Bodmin gradully took control of the game in the first half and scored twice in four minutes to virtually seal tie.

On the half-hour, lively striker Chris Luxton got clear and was brought down by keeper Ryan Lewis, picking himself up to blast home the resulting penalty.

Shortly afterwards it was 2-0 as Bodmin had a free-kick charged down and, when the ball came back to Steve Colwell, his low drive from 30 yards bounced in front of the diving Lewis and into the net.

The Cornish visitors wrapped up the tie with eight minutes remaining as Lewis pulled off a good save but the ball bounced up for Luxton to head home.

Joe heads Welly winner

Monday, August 16th, 2010

WELLINGTON have taken their first step on the long road to Wembley after a 1-0 win at Brislington on Saturday in the FA Cup extra preliminary round.

The returning Joe Dakwa, who missed the midweek defeat at Ilfracombe, was the match winner for Wellington, heading home Lewis Tasker’s off-target shot after 53 minutes.

In truth it could have been more comfortable for Wellington as Dakwa had efforts cleared off the line in both the first and second half of the match.

Brislington, who beat Wellington 2-1 in last week’s league opener, piled on the pressure towards the end of the match but the chances they created were dealt with by Wellington goalkeeper Ryan Lewis.

The win comes as sweet revenge for Wellington, who now go on to host Bodmin Town in the next round. Bodmin were 3-0 winners over Launceston.

Toolstation League premier division: Ilfracombe 2, Wellington 0

WELLINGTON suffered their second defeat of the season when they were beaten in North Devon on Tuesday night.

New boss Leigh Robinson was again unable to field anything like his first-choice line-up but they were still right in the game until former Wellington striker Leon Taswell scored Ilfracombe’s second goal with ten minutes to go.

Wellington found themselves on the back foot for most of the first half and Lee Francis hit the bar for Ilfracombe before they took the lead after 32 minutes. Taswell headed the ball forward to Shaun Lewis and his pass was swept home by strike partner Robert Gough.

Wellington gave a much better account of themselves after the break with Alex Pounde looking their biggest threat.

But Ilfracombe wrapped up the points in the closing stages when Taswell, who has also played for Taunton Town, headed home a Matt Downing cross.

Wellington: Ryan Lewis, Craig Mawford, Nathan Best, Scott Holland, Jack Adams, Mark Armstrong, Ben Sharland, David Thorne, Lewis Tasker, Luke Desave, Alex Pounde. Substitutes, Sam Bryant (for Desave), Chris Macdougall (for Tasker), Niall Martin (not used).

Opening day defeat

Toolstation League premier division: Brislington 2, Wellington 1.

WELLINGTON started their new premier campaign with an odd-goal defeat in Bristol on Saturday.

Fielding a squad with no fewer than eight new signings, they gave a spirited display which deserved a point from an evenly-contested game.

Brislington went ahead after 20 minutes as Danny Guiabarra converted a low cross.

But Wellington got back on level terms two minutes later when Craig Mawford’s free kick reached Joe Dakwa at the far post to volley home.

The turning point of the game came with 20 minutes remaining as Wellington’s Craig Herrod went down under a heavy challenge and was eventually stretchered off with a shoulder injury.

The long hold-up seemed to knock Wellington out of their stride and Brislington scored what proved to be the winner through Jason Llama’s towering header.

Wellington have another league game tomorrow (Tuesday) when they are away to Ilfracombe.
