In last eight of premier cup

Somerset Premier Cup second round: Wellington 3, Keynsham Town 2.

WELLINGTON reached the quarter-finals of the Somerset Premier Cup with victory over Toolstation first division side Keynsham at the Playing Field last night.

Wellington got off to a flying start when they went ahead after only three minutes. Player-boss Warren Patmore found Shane Kingston, who released John Bradford on the right before running on to meet Bradford’s cross and find the net.

The home side increased their lead midway through the first half as Patmore cleverly found Kingston in the box and the striker beat keeper Chris Astley with a fierce shot which went in off the far post.

Keynsham pulled a goal back on the hour in spectacular style as a shot from Gary McDermott flew past keeper Ryan Lewis and into the top corner.

And they drew level shortly afterwards when defender Chris Durbin drove through two challenges before sending in a cross, which was wickedly deflected into the net.

The turning point of the game came after 78 minutes as Astley collected a through ball only for referee’s assistant to rule that he had handled outside his area.

Keynsham protested vehemently about the decision and Ingram rubbed salt into their wounds by curling the free-kick around the wall and into the net.

Four defeats on trot

November 5th, 2009

Toolstation League premier division: Wellington 2, Barnstaple 4.

WELLINGTON suffered their fourth successive league defeat at home to Barnstaple last night.

Jordan Charran headed Barnstaple in front midway through the first half and then Ian Patchett doubled their advantage three minutes later.

Wellington needed a goal to get back into the game but it was Barnstaple who made it 3-0 against the run of play as substitute Stan Paxton scored from close range after 70 minutes.

Eight minutes later, another sub Josh Pearce was found in acres of space to score the fourth.

Wellington scored a pair of late consolation goals by Shane Kingston and Craig Herrod.

Wellington are without a game this Saturday but entertain Keynsham Town in the Somerset Premier Cup next Wednesday (7.30pm).

Hundreds flock to our celebration match

October 29th, 2009

LEAGUE One sids Yeovil Town ran out 4-2 winners in a special match staged by Wellington last night.

The Toolstation premier division club took on the Glovers in a triple celebration watched by an estimated crowd of more than 300.

Two goals by Keiran Murtagh – who celebrates his 21st birthday today – put Yeovil into a 2-1 half-time lead after Shane Kingston had given Wellington an early advantage.

Yeovil had started the game with a number of first-team players including Murtagh, Andy Lindegaard, Andre McCollin and George O’Callaghan.

Second-half goals by trialist Andy Owens and youth team player Rob Clowes settled the matter, before Wellington got a second goal scored by Eubio Rosario on the stroke of full-time.

Wellington joint manager and Yeovil legend Warren Patmore, came on as a second-half substitute, but a possible appearance of his former team-mate, now Glovers’ boss Terry Skiverton, failed to materialise because of illness.

But the result was insignificant as the game was held to celebrate the official switch-on of Wellington’s new £30,000 floodlights at the Playing Field.

The match also coincided with the club formally being presented with the FA’s top Charter Standard award and supporters were able to see the newly-refurbished lounge bar.

Wellington chairman Ken Bird said: “This match came about because of Warren’s friendship with Yeovil boss Terry Skiverton and we cannot thank the Glovers’ enough for taking time out of their busy schedule.

“This was also a chance to thank the many people – including our grant providers, sponsors and other backers – who have helped us complete our major ground improvement project following our promotion to the Premier Division in the Toolstation League.

“To everyone who has helped in any way – particularly our officers, committee, players and supporters – we are eternally grateful.”

Yeovil Town match is tomorrow

October 27th, 2009

FINAL preparations are being made for one of the biggest nights in Wellington Football Club’s long history.

The Toolstation premier division club are taking on League One side Yeovil Town in a special match at the Playing Field tomorrow night (Wednesday).

Glovers boss Terry Skiverton has promised to bring a strong team after being contacted by his former Glovers team-mate Warren Patmore, who is now joint boss of Wellington.

The game, which kicks off at 7.45pm, will mark:

The switch-on of Wellington’s new £30,000 floodlights and completion of their major ground improvements project; The presentation by Somerset FA of the Community Club Award – the highest recognition a club can achieve under the Charter Standard scheme; The refurbishment of the clubhouse lounge as the latest phase in improving the social facilities.

“This night will mark the culmination of a remarkable couple of years for Wellington AFC – both on and off the pitch,” said chairman Ken Bird.

“We have improved the standard of football at which we play, the number of teams we run and the overall quality of our facilities.

“None of this would have been achieved without a huge amount of hard work by everyone involved in the club and also support from our various grant providers and sponsors.

“Tomorrow night will be a chance for us to say thank-you to all of them at the same time as enjoying some quality football – we hope as many people as possible will come along.”

Admission to the game is £5 for adults and £3 for OAPs/children.

Les Phillips Cup preliminary round: Wellington 3, Melksham Town 1.

PLAYER-MANAGER Warren Patmore marked his first start for Wellington by scoring twice as they knocked premier division rivals Melksham out of the Les Phillips Cup yesterday.
The former Yeovil Town legend warmed up for a special match against his former club on Wednesday by producing a pair of trademark headers to help Wellington bounce back after two heavy defeats.
Midfielder Simon Ingram scored the third goal in the second half to wrap up the game.
Wellington are home to Yeovil Town’s first team in a special match to switch on their new £30,000 floodlights this Wednesday.

Welly crash again

October 19th, 2009

Toolstation League premier division: Wellington 2, Bristol Manor Farm 5.

WELLINGTON leaked five goals for the second successive game as they crashed at home to Manor Farm on Saturday.
The visitors went ahead thanks to a double strike from midfielder Carl Rutter.
And they virtually made the game safe before half-time thanks to further goals from Scott Feltham and Luke Clarke.
Manor Farm increased their lead after the break through Dan Dunt although Wellington pulled back a pair of consolation goals scored by John Bradford and Scott Holland.
This Saturday, Wellington are home to Melksham Town in the Les Phillips Cup.

Thumping defeat at Bideford

October 14th, 2009

Toolstation League Premier Division: Bideford 5, Wellington 0.
WELLINGTON’S unbeaten run was ended in most comprehensive fashion in North Devon last night.
Only keeper Will Radford stopped the scoreline from being even worse with a string of fines saves on a night to forget.
As Bideford launched wave after wave of attacks, he kept the scoreline blank until the 26th minute when he could do nothing about a smart shot on the turn from ex-Taunton Town star Ellis Laight.
The game was virtually over as the home side added two more goals before the break with Kevin Squire springing the offside trap to make it 2-0 and Ben Wood volleying home with Radford caught in no man’s land for the third.
If Wellington had hoped for an improvement in their fortunes  in the second half, this was dashed as Matt Andrew pounced on a loose ball to chip Radford only six minutes after the restart.
Radford produced three more fine saves before Squire scored the goal of the game with seven minutes remaining as he produced a sublime piece of skill to send himself racing clear for his second.

Four out of four …

October 11th, 2009

Toolstation League premier division: Melksham Town 0, Wellington 1.

A LATE goal by substitute Mark Burgess saw Wellington make it four wins on the trot in Wiltshire yesterday.

The game was heading for a draw when Burgess fired a low shot through a crowd of players and into the net.

Wellington had created the better openings without being able to make the vital breakthrough.

And their cause was helped twenty minutes from time when Melksham had a player sent off.

Wellington have a tough game this Tuesday when they travel to play Bideford and on Saturday they are home to Manor Farm – both are league matches.
