Wellington lost their second scheduled pre-season game of the 2018 season to the weather when their planned trip to new WEPL Somerset Division club Yeovil was called off two days ahead of play due to wet weather meaning that no playing surface preparation was possible in the week leading up to the game. Wellington Sunday XI completed the Club’s 2017 season with a trip to the Valley of the Rocks to take on Lynton and Lynmouth last weekend and came away from a pleasant day at this most picturesque venue with a 144 run win over the side that plays in the North Devon Sunday League’s third tier. Choosing to bat first saw Wellington open up with Trevor Brooks and Aks Latifi and they put on one hundred runs for the opening wicket
Rain for most of the day saw that Wellington Sunday XI’s scheduled friendly match with Wombats at Bishops Lydeard CC last weekend was called off on the day as for a second time this season the weather saw that no play was possible between the two sides.
Rain on seven days running starting on Thursday 27th July saw that Wellington Midweek XI’s social evening T20 match with local rivals Ashbrittle, scheduled for Thursday 3rd August, was called off the evening before due to the cumulative effects involved. The whole square had been rendered very wet and was deemed to be unplayable.
Wellington’s three league games the previous day were all curtailed by heavy rain from teatime onwards and this continued on through the evening and overnight and so saw local cricket was affected into Sunday too. Devon was perhaps hit harder than Somerset last weekend as their entire Premier League programme was washed out on the Saturday and so Wellington Sunday XI’s planned friendly match at Exmouth was called off on the Saturday evening.
