Wellington Sunday XI 225-4 Lynton and Lynmouth 81

Wellington Sunday XI completed the Club’s 2017 season with a trip to the Valley of the Rocks to take on Lynton and Lynmouth last weekend and came away from a pleasant day at this most picturesque venue with a 144 run win over the side that plays in the North Devon Sunday League’s third tier.

Choosing to bat first saw Wellington open up with Trevor Brooks and Aks Latifi and they put on one hundred runs for the opening wicket as both made half-centuries; Latifi hit the ball out of the ground five times in making 64 before he was first out and Brooks hit one six in making 51 as he worked the ball around the park well.

Mark Bray with 20 played his first knock in over a month due to injury and he was pleased to have spent some time in the middle.

Tom Chambers upped the pace late on as he made 51 and was particularly severe on Spice who took 2-66 in eight overs having gone for just 20 runs in his first five overs.

Ollie Beale’s 20 was a good addition to the last few overs that Wellington faced and it was left to Andy and Jacob Hurry to take the Red and Blacks to 225-4 at tea.

Wellington bowled well throughout as Thom and Bob Trott offered seam and spin to start with and a bullet of a throw from Tom Chambers saw the end of Payne and when Trott senior trapped Patel LBW L and L were 2-2 and in a spot of bother.

Keech and Millington with 17 each hung around for a time, but Lee Nichol’s pacy five over burst realised 2-8 and the home side were in further trouble as a result.

Jacob Hurry and Ollie Beale applied another dose of seam and spin and continued to apply the pressure and it was left to Andy Hurry with one wicket and Mark Salter with two to complete the win for Wellington with three overs to spare.

Although that is the outdoor season over for another year the Club picks up the indoor form of the game on Sunday 1st October at Somerset CCC when they take on North Petherton CC in the Somerset Cricket Board’s Indoor League Division A from 6.00pm; Wellington were runners up in 2016-2017…
