And the Wednesday before, October 19th, they drew 1-1 at home to high-riding Portishead.

Cracking win

October 11th, 2005

Toolstation League: Longwell Green 1, Wellington 2

Wellington recorded a much-needed win away to newly-promoted Longwell Green in Bristol on Saturday.

The opening exchanges were pretty even with Wellington keeper Wayne Hitchcott pulling off a couple of smart saves while, at the other end, Piper twice shot just wide of the target and skipper Simon Ingram saw a shot on the turn saved by keeper David Leggett.

But the home side gradually tightened their grip on the game and should have taken the lead as Matt Gunstone, Dan Tanner, Chris Dauncey and Chris Alway all failed to capitalise on clearcut openings.

And they were made to pay for the misses in first-half injury time when Shane Gage played a lovely ball over the top of the home defence for Piper to run on and coolly flip the ball over the advancing Leggett.

That goal seemed to stir Wellington into action after the break and although Gunstone had a “goal” disallowed for offside, it was the visitors who looked the more dangerous.

And the lead was eventually doubled after 69 minutes as a corner came out to Gage on the left and, when he drilled the ball into the crowded area, Woon was on hand to turn it over the line from close range.

Longwell Green threw men forward to try and rescue the game but their luck was out again as a fierce volley by substitute Mark Shore smacked into Gage on the goalline. Woon also saw a header cleared off the line by a defender in the closing minutes before Shore did reduce the arrears with a sweet finish after Hitchcott had blocked a through ball.

Wellington: Hitchcott, Elsley, Hammond, Andrews, Bowrah, Norman, Reader, Ingram, Gage, Piper, Woon. Substitutes, Baker, Nicholls and Jackson (not used).

OTHER ACTION: Wellington Reserves lost 3-1 away to Axminster Town in the East Devon Cup while the third team went down 2-1 away to Middlezoy Rovers in the Taunton Saturday League’s second division.

Les Phillips Cup: Wellington 1, Weston St Johns 3

WELLINGTON suffered their first home defeat of the season and bowed out of the Les Phillips Cup
at the first hurdle as they went down to division one rivals Weston St Johns at the Playing Field last Wednesday night.

The game was decided in 15 disastrous minutes midway through the first half as Weston scored three times.

Jamie Wootton capitalised on some hesitant defending twice in 12 minutes and then Ryan Havard drilled home a low free-kick.

Nick Woon pulled a goal back from the penalty spot just before half-time after a foul on Piper but Wellington had left themselves too big a mountain to climb.

Hat-trick of wins!

October 1st, 2005

WELLINGTON’S three sides recorded a hat-trick of cracking wins on Saturday, October 1st.

The first team progressed into the first round proper of the FA Vase with a 1-0 home win over Ringwood Town, thanks to an Alexis Piper header.

The reserves won 4-0 at Sidmouth in the Devon and Exeter League’s senior one with two goals apiece from James Baker and Jack Barnden.

And the thirds completed the treble with a 4-3 home win over Sydenham in the Taunton Saturday League.

Well done to them all!

Disappointing defeat

September 24th, 2005

WELLINGTON were made to pay for some woeful defending as they were beaten 4-2 at Elmore in the Toolstation Division One on Saturday, September 24th.

Elmore led 1-0 at the interval and also missed a first-half penalty.

They ran in three more goals after the break while Wellington replied through Nick Woon and Greg Hammond.

Meanwhile, two goals from John Tong earned Wellington Reserves a 2-2 draw at home to Clyst Valley.

FA Vase First Qualifying Round: Wellington 3, Calne Town 1

WELLINGTON staged a magnificent second-half fightback to knock Calne, of the Toolstation League’s premier division, out of the FA Vase at the Playing Field last Saturday.

The memorable victory earned them £500 in prizemoney and a home tie against Ringwood Town, from the Wessex League, on Saturday, October 1.

To quote the old football cliché, it was definitely a game of two halves as Calne were on top before the interval only to be knocked out of their stride by tactical changes by Wellington’s new management team.

The Wellington scorers were John Norman, Simon Ingram and Nick Woon.
