Six points clear
Toolstation League division one: Wellington 1, Roman Glass St George 0.
WELLINGTON moved six points clear at the top of the table thanks to an odd-goal victory over league newcomers Roman Glass at the Playing Field last night (Wednesday).
But the slender margin of the scoreline does not tell the story of a game Leigh Robinson’s side dominated for long periods.
They played some excellent football, particularly in the first half, but found the stubborn Roman Glass defence hard to penetrate.
And indeed it took a second half penalty to finally separate the sides.
Wellington created opening after opening from the kick-off as they put the visitors under the cosh without being able to break the deadlock.
Yet Roman Glass almost went ahead just before the break when a breakaway ended with a goalline clearance by defender Dan Short.
The breakthrough finally came ten minutes after the interval when the referee judged that Ali Pounde had been fouled in the area and skipper Simon Ingram stepped up to score from the spot.
The game erupted into an ugly brawl after a bad tackle by Roman Glass winger Luke Westwood.
And another challenge on Wellington’s Craig Mawford near the end saw the youngster carried off on a stretcher and taken to hospital with a damaged ankle.
Wellington: Stuart Wood, Tim Legg, Scott Holland, Dan Short, Jack Adams, Craig Mawford, Simon Ingram, Andy Butler, Craig Herrod, Nick Woon, Ali Pounde. Substitutes, Mark Thompson, Simon Elsley and Dan Holland (all used).
On Saturday, Wellington are home to Portishead in a league game (3.00).
