Cup victory … at third attempt

Les Phillips Cup: Wellington 1, Bradford Town 0

WELLINGTON notched up a narrow victory over Bradford Town in the preliminary round of the Les Phillips Cup at the Playing Field last night (Wednesday).

It was Wellington’s third home cup match in the space of eight days and, after two close-run defeats at the hands of premier division sides, they will have been pleased to have avoided an unwanted hat-trick.

The stalemate was broken in the 74th minute when Wellington wide man Craig Herrod was brought down by Tom Rooney’s lunging tackle and the referee pointed to the spot, skipper Simon Ingram calmly converting the penalty.

The result earned Leigh Robinson’s side a first-round tie away to Toolstation League champions Corsham Town on Saturday, November 10.

Wellington: Ryan Lewis, Tim Legg, Daniel Short, Scott Holland, Matt Fowler, Greg Blenkinsop, Simon Ingram, Andy Butler, Craig Herrod, Nick Woon, Craig Mawford. Substitutes, Alex Rudd, Jack Adams and Dave Anthony (all used).

WELLINGTON return to league action on Saturday with a home game against Backwell United (3pm) and then are home again next Wednesday, October 17th, to Westbury United (7.45).
