Taunton St Andrews Sunday XI 355-7 Wellington Sunday XI 261
Some 616 runs were posted in this Taunton and District Sunday League Division A game at Wellington last weekend when WEPL Premier One club Taunton St Andrews inflicted a first defeat of the season on the Red and Blacks Sunday outfit as they cracked 355 in 40 overs, but Wellington can be proud of their response as they lost by 94 runs in the end having made 261 themselves.
On a very hot day TSA won the toss and chose to bat and sent their big guns into bat and Hayman was portent of what was to come as he smacked 87 to be second out with the score on 136 and overs gone had just reached double figures.
Good catching from Connor Wickenden and Tyler Fyfe had brought about these successes and with spin coming into the attack Oli Beale and Arron Campbell stemmed the run flow to make TSA 157-4 and Wellington had fought back, but Contreras and Williams-Thomas had other ideas as they added 104 for the fifth wicket and then Walford joined Williams-Thomas to add 84 for the sixth wicket as Williams-Thomas made a brutal 141 before he was out in the last over to Nathan Roberts who snared two wickets.
Macaulay Campbell with 1-38 in seven overs, Oli Beale with 3-48 in seven overs and Arron Campbell with 0-25 in seven overs each kept a cool head amid all the hitting.
Wellington knew that challenging the total that TSA had set was not really on, but they had steel about them as Ben Evett and Nathan Roberts showed as they put on 99 for the first wicket with Evett making a fine 79 as he took the attack to TSA and won; with Robers making 26 they resisted until the 18th of 40 overs had been sent down.
Ben Meek with 49 played a powerful knock with four sixes and through his play Wellington were going to get full batting points and when he was out with the score at 197-5 that aim had been nearly achieved.
Arron Campbell with 20 and Macaulay Campbell with 12 did well in the middle order and Rob Moysey was hitting the ball hard with two sixes in his 38 and with Wellington making it to 261 when they were bowled out with two balls to go they can look back on having come out fighting with the bat in the face of a large total as Sanders and Clapp each collected three wickets for TSA.
Wellington took 14 points from the game and stay top of the shop, but with a reduced majority from TSA (who took 26 points here) and Wembdon who also won on the day taking 30 points from their visit to North Petherton.
