North Petherton Sunday XI 187-6 v Wellington Sunday XI
Wellington Sunday XI saw their home Taunton and District Sunday League Division A game with fellow WEPL Somerset Division club North Petherton washed away after 29.2 overs last weekend with the visitors well placed on 187-6 with just over ten overs to go.
Having won the toss and seeing that the weather was always going to pay a part Petherton opted to bat first and saw Taunton Town FC goalkeeper Lloyd Irish – fresh from an FA Cup win with them the previous day – and Winter put on 92 opening wicket runs in vibrant fashion as they lofted the ball well.
The breakthrough came when Irish was caught by Jack Beal at mid off from Rob Moysey for 50.
Spin brought Wellington back into the game as Moysey with two wickets and Sam Whitefield with two as well challenged the Petherton middle order, although their overseas player Porteous with 58 played some audacious shots.
Ben Evett’s great running boundary catch to get rid of Winter for 33 was a fine effort.
When Macaulay Campbell joined the attack he claimed two wickets in his opening two overs and Petherton were reduced to 187-6, but by now the rain was becoming heavier and heavier and the players left the field of play and took tea; they did not return as the rain began to ‘pool’ on the outfield and so the match was abandoned as a draw with Wellington taking 13 points to North Petherton’s 20.
