Wellington Sunday XI 131-8 Bridgwater Sunday XI 126-7
Wellington are one point clear of Bridgwater at the top of Division A of the Taunton and District Sunday League following this narrow five run win at home last Wednesday evening when the two sides played a T20 match in place of the longer game that had been scheduled for Sunday 26th June, but was postponed due to Bridgwater 1st XI’s involvement in the National Club T20 Championship.
Wellington chose to beat first and lost a wicket in the first over, but skipper Arron Campbell with 34 and Luke Desave with 31 added 59 for the second wicket.
Desave was joined by the in-form Jack Beal who made 20 and at 94-3 Wellington were entering the second half of their innings in a good way, but they got bogged down somewhat and at 117-8 were not where they wished to be, but the final over made all the difference as Rob Moysey with 24no and Ryan Henwood with two boundaries got Wellington to 131-8.
Bridgwater had bowled well as Denovan, Kelly and Duckering each took two wickets in their four over allocations.
The visitors reply started well with Devitt and Coombes adding 42 good runs first up and this stand was looking to set Bridgwater up well for a run chase before Ian Hewson took a catch in the deep of off Rob Moysey to see the back of Coombes for 22.
Fifteen runs later Arron Campbell caught and bowled his counterpart Devitt for 35 and from then on it was Wellington who took the lead role in the game.
Another wicket for Rob Moysey and a good four over burst from Jack Beal slowed Bridgwater down despite the best efforts of Luff with 24.
Zandre Swartz – as effective with his leg spinners as he is when batting and keeping for the 1st XI – bowled the last over and although Sykes-Moore got to the last ball of the game needing a six to tie matters it was a benign ball that ended proceedings and saw that Wellington took 22 points to Bridgwater’s 15 and so just edged ahead to the top of the table.
