Bridgwater Sunday XI 164-6 Wellington Sunday XI 166-6

Wellington’s opening home game of the 2011 season saw the Sunday XI win a Taunton and District Sunday League Division A match against Bridgwater last Saturday when a fine all round performance from the Red and Blacks collected them 19 points.

Paul Short asked the WEPL Premier One club to bat first on a dry wicket and saw Thom Trott and Luke Desave use the new ball well, but Bridgwater opener Kitch played some punchy shots off his legs and looked set before Desave trapped him LBW and the breakthrough was made.

Ali Bunce with his darting off breaks was again great value for his seven over burst and let just 20 runs go all told – he is going to be a great addition to Wellington’s already impressive spin attack.

Neil Hendy was accurate in another good seven over burst as Bridgwater found the going hard from being 100-1; they made just 64 more runs. Wickets for Rob Moysey, Alex Troake and Robbie Rexworthy – back with Wellington for a second spell – saw that Wellington would need 165 to win.

Wellington bounded home with 7.4 overs to spare as an electric start from Paul Short and Robbie Rexworthy realised 33 in under eight overs with Rexworthy once planting the ball out of the ground.

On his departure for 16 Alex Sparks – making a visit back to Wellington from his current base in Manchester – creamed 38 with some lovely cover drives on offer as he and Short added 80 for the second wicket. Sparks will be back for Wellington in June and will be a great addition to an already good looking squad.

Short made 41 and played well square of the wicket.

Wellington had a small wobble at 122-4, but Aks Latifi played hard and his 22 settled Wellington’s nerves; there was still time to lose two more wickets, but Marc Holloway and Rob Moysey saw Wellington home and to a first win following their Sunday League promotion in 2010.

The two teams meet at Bridgwater on Sunday 15th May for the return fixture.
