Wellington Sunday XI got a measure of revenge last weekend when they beat WEPL Bristol and Somerset side Chard by 64 runs, having gone down by 133 runs away just a fortnight earlier, in a home friendly match.
Steve Symons opted to bat first and saw that Rob Moysey and James Bath posted a solid 85 run opening wicket stand for Wellington in the 20 overs to drinks – Moysey steadily built the platform for the innings and Bath played with great maturity as he suffered several blows to his hands and body and not for the first time had bruises to show for it.
He was first out for Wellington having made 32 when he was run out going for two in the first over after the break.
Steve Symons joined Moysey and they added a decent second wicket stand that was broken when Symons was the second run out victim of the Wellington innings for ten and at 147-2 his side had lots of wickets in hand, but were rapidly running out of overs – this was remedied by an assault of Bothamesque proportions by Aks Latifi as he hit 65no in the six overs he was at the crease for; he hit five mighty sixes and added 78 for the third wicket with Moysey who ended the innings on 86no.
Chard skipper Scott had figures of 5-1-12-0 after the first over of his second spell – by the end of the Wellington innings he had figures of 8-1-62-0 as his last three overs went for 50 as Latifi laid into his medium pace.
Chard’s best bowler by far was left arm spinner Fussell who went for 35 in his 8 overs and with Chard’s catching been lax he went unrewarded.
Chard needed 226 to win and had to go at them from the off as a run rate of 6 was needed.
Wellington made inroads early as Michael Gill and Patrick Jarman bowled tightly and accurately in tandem – Gill bowled Chard first team keeper Warren, who had earlier kept wicket very well indeed as he made several great stops and takes for his side and Jarman yorked Clarke.
Having been dropped in the first over Chard opener Hayes went on to make 65 as he batted for most of his side’s innings in what was a good knock.
Ross Brayley with a great eight over burst of accurate medium pace got two wickets for his efforts as he took a caught and bowled chance and Michael Gill took a good low catch at mid wicket.
Jake Nichol, Alex Troake and Aaron Chugg with 3-16 kept the good work with the ball going for Wellington and with two wickets for Rob Moysey as well the game came to a close with Chard 64 short of the Wellington total and the teams will meet once more at Chard in September.
Next Sunday sees the resumption of Sunday League action with a visit from Taunton St Andrews. Players should note that Paul Short will select and contact the side, but Rob Moysey will be captain for the match due to Paul having another cricketing commitment on the day.
Grateful thanks go to Dennis Fullstone and Amanda Moysey for doing tea duty for this match.

With a much changed team for the long trip to Frome Wellington 2nd XI put up a game fight, but lost their unbeaten record after going down by eight wickets and are replaced on top of Division Two of the Somerset League’s Reserves competition by the home side by a single point.
With five changes having been made from the previous week Wellington were asked to bat first and saw Mark Salter and Liam Kubicki add a solid 24 runs for the opening wicket with Salter hitting four fours in a personal score of 24.
A fine third wicket partnership of 61 between Richard Henwood and Tobi Jenkins saw Frome struggle for a while as Henwood – making a comeback after over a month out with a broken hand – cracked 38 with a big six and Jenkins made a feisty 24 and when they were together Wellington were running at around four runs an over, but Crabtree got both out and then Sanger with 4-19 broke the Wellington innings up and 92-2 became 134 all out with 6.2 overs to spare.
Wellington made Frome work very hard for their runs, but Leonard with 50 and Stonell with 33 held firm for an opening stand of 76 before George Coate (2-48 in 10 overs) saw them back to the pavilion with the score nearing one hundred, that was the last success Wellington enjoyed as L.Dredge and Frome skipper Simpson saw their side home by eight wickets and with 17.1 overs to spare.
Traditionally this has always been an arduous fixture and is now out the way for this season and with players to return for next week the challenge for honours resumes.

Wellington slipped to fourth in Division One of the Somerset League and are now 25 points behind leaders Taunton Outcasts as the Red and Blacks fell to a second successive defeat against a newly promoted side.
The first ever league meeting between Wellington and Ashbrittle saw last season’s Division Two champions opt to bowl first and they made quick incisions into the Wellington line up as the score fell away to 53-5 in 20 overs with Andy Hill taking 3-29 in 12 fine overs and he was supported well by his side’s other bowlers – Jack Bradbury with 4-30 wrapped up the Wellington innings.
Michael Gill with a fine 60 saw that Wellington did recover from the score on 20 overs to see that the last five wickets added 109 runs to give Wellington something to bowl at – Thom Trott with 23 and Max Capaldi with 29 added 64 for the sixth wicket, but overall Wellington’s batting had not clicked for the first time this season.
Michael Gill and Adrian Lee bowled tightly for Wellington with Gill ending his first seven overs with figures of 1-4 and five maidens, Lee did great work with 2-38 in 11 overs as Wellington had Ashbrittle at 55-3 in 20 overs.
Jack Bradbury with a good 47 saw his side were always in contention, but he was caught behind by Aks Latifi off of Paul Short (2-40 in 12 overs) on the first ball after drinks and with Max Capaldi taking 2-22 in 7 overs Wellington were back in the driving seat with Ashbrittle at 120-7 and needing around 40 in 8 overs and they did not look back from there as Alfie Venner-Woodcock and Ben Franks added an unbroken 43 eighth wicket runs to see them take the local derby by three wickets and a full bag of points.
Wellington took fifteen points and with four away matches in the next five they will have to put the hard yards in on the road as they look at get back to where they were just two games ago.
