Wellington Sunday XI 208-7 – Street Sunday XI 149

Saturday, April 26th, 2008

Wellington kept up their excellent record in this fixture with a sixth win in seven over the team from the Somerset Levels with this 59 run win last Sunday.
Wellington were put into bat and their score dipped to 42-4 in 15 overs as Higgs with 2-18 and Farrow with 2-24 did a good job for the home side as they bowled accurately and in a controlled fashion, but a fine 74 run sixth wicket stand between Matt Daniel and Thom Trott got Wellington back on track.

Trott made a fine 48 with two large hits for six off of leg-spinner Ganfield been the best offerings, but on his departure the score fell away once more to 126-7, but this was the moment for Daniel to make a superb 112no as he chose the right time to hit top gear and with Adrian Lee (20no) added 82 for the eighth wicket in only 10 overs as they wrested the game away from the home side after they had started well.

208-7 at tea represented a great show in the end by Wellington.

Lee then got to work with the ball as he and Charlie Last reduced Street to the depths of 10-4 before rain came and seemed to have given the home side a reprieve, on the resumption of play Linter with 53 and W.Wall with 29 added 83 for Street’s fifth wicket, but both were removed LBW by Thom Trott and Max Capaldi respectively.

Street skipper D.Wall kept Wellington at bay for seven overs as he lashed 26, but Charlie Last took his third wicket of the innings to seal victory for Wellington with 5.2 overs to spare and keep up their good Sunday record over the WEPL (Somerset Division) club.

Brixham 156-6 – Wellington Sunday XI 160-4

Friday, April 25th, 2008

Paul Short opted to insert the visitors on winning the toss at home last Saturday, but saw Devon League ‘B’ side Brixham get away with a 49 run opening wicket stand between Fletcher (58) and Robinson (30) as they looked at home for some 15 overs.
Matt Daniel got the breakthrough when he yorked Robinson for 30 and then proceeded to bowl his ten overs for only 27 runs and was able to collect two more wickets as the Brixham innings stalled.
Richard Henwood’s four overs cost only nine runs and Thom Trott bowled a fine 10 overs spell on the reel as he looked like he was back to his very best.
He and Paul Short made sure that Brixham did not ever really prosper in the last ten overs of their innings as only 49 runs came – only Barron for the visitors with 21no made a real impression after the opening partnership had been broken.
Trott took 1-32 and Short 2-36.
Wellington’s fielding was of a good quality too as catches were held by Kevin Symons, Mark Salter, Matt Daniel, Rob Moysey and Thom Trott.

Brixham came at Wellington hard and their opening attack of Hyde and Eaves bowled fast and true, but Mark Salter and Matt Daniel survived and grew in confidence as the innings developed.
They had added 25 good runs when Daniel was bowled by Hyde (1-22).
Salter played a fine knock of 41 with six fours and he was closing in on a half-century when Brixham skipper Pugh trapped him LBW.
The same fate befell Alex Sparks, but not before he had made a good 31 and had added 73 second wicket runs with Salter.
Rob Moysey joined proceedings and reminded those who had played at Brixham at the end of last season of the century he had made then by cracking exactly 50no with 8 fours and a six.
He and Richard Henwood saw the Red and Blacks over the line and to a six wicket win.

Wellington Sunday XI 144 – Burnham-on-Sea Sunday XI 107

Saturday, April 19th, 2008

Wellington’s series of pre-season practice sessions paid dividends as the Sunday XI opened the 2008 season with a great win at Somerset League Division Two club Burnham-on-Sea last weekend when a great performance in the field – particularly from the spinners – brought about a 37 run win.

On a green track Burnham-on-Sea had no hesitation in asking Wellington to bat, but this was no issue to openers Matthew Daniel – this season’s overseas player from South Africa – and 2nd XI vice-captain Kevin Crout as they added 87 runs in under 20 overs.

Daniel showed that he has class in making 44 with the square cut coming to the fore and he was closing in on a fifty in his first innings for the Red and Blacks when he speared one high and was well caught by Birkett.

Crout cracked two sixes in his offering of 45, but after he was out only one Wellington player recorded a double figure score as Marc Holloway made a good looking 26.

Wellington slid from 87-0 to 144 all out in under 20 overs as Brogden bowled accurately to take 4-23 in 9 overs and breke the back of the Wellington innings.

Green and Birkett came back on at the end and wrapped things up to leave the Red and Blacks needing to bowl well after tea having lost their way with the bat after being given a good start.

Ashfold and Steer gave Burnham-on-Sea – looking for third successive win in this fixture – a good start of 38 runs for the first wicket, although Adrian Lee bowled immaculately as he let only four runs go in his opening six over burst.

Wellington skipper Paul Short turned to spin early as he introduced himself and Max Capaldi to the attack and this was the change that brought them back into the match.

Capaldi took the first four wickets to fall as he got some big turn out of the pitch, taking 4-23 in 10 good overs.

Short got rid of Burnham keeper Batt and together they had bowled 20 overs for only 47 runs and had taken 5 wickets.

The only Burnham batsman to give Wellington any issues was Ashfold who made 54, but was eventually well caught by Adrian Lee off of Matthew Daniel who capped a great debut with 4-17 in 6 overs as his off-spin profited too.

Lee Nicol had a good senior debut as he claimed a wicket late on and held the match winning catch to give Wellington a 37 run win.

This weekend sees two matches on offer as the Sunday XI entertain Brixham at home on Saturday 26th April and then travel to Street on Sunday 27th April.

The Brixham match starts at 1.30pm and the Street match 2.00pm.
