Toolstation League premier division: Wellington 0, Brislington 6

BOTTOM club Wellington saw their season plumb new depths as they were hit for six by Brislington in front of their own fans on Saturday..

The game was virtually over by half-time as Wellington conceded three goals to the visitors, themselves struggling in the bottom half of the table.

Danny Guibarra shot Brislington ahead after 12 minutes and dangerman Leroy Shaby raced away down the right to make it 2-0 20 minutes later.

The Wellington defence were left flat-footed as Mike Rimmer cleverly flicked home the third five minutes before the break.

It got worse for home side in the second half when Brislington skipper Jason Hughes scored from a towering header after 52 minutes and then Rimmer produced the goal of the game 11 minutes later.

Substitute Ben Harris completed Wellington’s misery by scoring the sixth with four minutes remaining.

Wellington now face the daunting prospect of home games against the league’s top two – leaders Bishop Sutton on Wednesday (7.30) and neighbours Willand Rovers next Saturday.

IT was the same old story for bottom side Wellington as they returned after a six-week break to let a lead slip and suffered yet another odd-goal defeat at the Playing Field.

A scrappy first-half saw the visitors take the lead after 23 minutes with a breakaway goal scored by former Wellington winger Dan Thompson.

The game exploded into life after the break as Wellington equalised with a fine shot by debutant Mark Clunie and then took the lead from the penalty spot, skpper Craig Mawford scoring after another new boy, his brother Jake, had been fouled.

But Sherborne clinched the points as the home defence twice failed to deal with high balls into their penalty area.

Wellington’s misery was complete when defender Mark Armstrong was sent off for a tackle from behind in the dying minutes.

Wellington are in action at the Playing Field again on Saturday when they entertain Brislington (3pm).

A New Year brought about a morale boosting win for Wellington Reserves over one of their rivals in the battle to survive the drop from the Premier Division of the Devon and Exeter League.

Wellington had not played for the thickest part of two months through weather considerations and the festive period falling on a weekend too and they looked not at their sharpest early on as Alphington who started the game one place and one point better off than Dave Thomas’ side, but having played a game more worked some nice moves in the opening twenty minutes – indeed the home side had the ball in the back of the net twice with a push on Wellington keeper Chris Cherry and an off side flag cancelling out their efforts.

With Craig Aspin back in Wellington colours after his transfer from Willand Rovers was finalised in good time for this match and Ashley Gaines also making a return to Wellington ranks the Tangerines second string gained in confidence and quality and held Alphington at arms length for the rest of the game pretty much as the home side were restricted to pot shots from long distance as the Wellington back four of James Garrard, Tom Phillips, Darren Mace and Mitch Woodgate held firm and gave the midfield and the front two good service as the game wore on.

Craig Aspin scored a comeback goal as he finished from the angle and slotted home for 1-0 to Wellington; Joe Enticott doubled the advantage for the Tangerines and they went into half time much the happier of the two sides.

The second half saw Alphington come back into things more and they did hit the bar, but Wellington could have increased their lead too and in the end that the three points came back up the M5 was the right result.

Wellington go up one spot to 14th and although they still occupy a relegation spot mid table security is now visible with only four points now separating Wellington and seventh placed Beer Albion based on Wellington’s result only.

As the thaw has commenced it is hoped that we can get back to action after the long enforced break on Bank Holiday Monday.

The 1st XI host Sherborne at 1.00pm and the Reserves are away to Alphington Reserves at 2.15pm.

WELLINGTON’S Les Phillips Cup tie at Radstock, which was postponed for the second time yesterday, has been rearranged for Tuesday, January 18th (7.30pm).

That means Gary Domone’s side now have a packed programme of matches as follows:

December 27, Dawlish (away 1pm); January 3, Sherborne (home 1pm); 8, Brislington (home); 12, Bishop Sutton (home); 15 Willand (home); 18, Radstock (away, cup); 22, Hallen (away); 26, Larkhall (home); 29, Street (home).

The weather saw to it that by the time Wellington Reserves play again it will be the New Year and the best part of two months will have passed since the squad last tasted match action.

With the snow having fallen in large quantities and the roads blocked as much as the Exmouth pitch being unplayable the game was called off on Saturday morning and makes for a four match backlog for the team managed by Dave Thomas.

The team are next set for a game at Alphington on the New Year Bank Holiday Monday – 3rd January from 2.15pm, but this season is going the same way as 2009-2010 did with games falling victim to any number of reasons and making for such a backlog that it may become hard, nigh on impossible, to manage adequately.

THE wintry weather is already taking its grip on the weekend sporting fixtures.

A number of matches have already been called off after today’s snow and with freezing temperatures forecast for tonight.

Among the first casualties was Wellington’s Les Phillips Cup tie away to Radstock Town.

It is the second time the game has been called off and now a new date will have to be found.

The cancellation means Gary Domone’s side have now gone a month without a competitive fixture.

Toolstation League games off so far are at Bishop Sutton, Sherborne, Willand and Merthyr.

THE freezing weather is playing havoc with the weekend sporting programme again.

Among the casualties is Wellington’s Toolstation premier match at home to Bishop Sutton, which has just been called off because of the state of the Playing Field pitch.

It will mean a second blank weekend for Wellington, whose Les Phillips Cup tie at Radstock last Saturday was also called off.

That match will now be played on Saturday, December 18th.

Snow and ice cost Wellington Reserves a second match in a row in the Premier Division of the Devon and Exeter League when their home match with Beer Albion was called off on the morning of the game last weekend.

With the ground frozen solid in places there was no chance of playing and a second match of the season needs to be rearranged.

The team has no match next weekend and then host Sidmouth and travel to Exmouth Amateurs in the two weeks before Christmas.
