Welly run continues

Toolstation League premier division: Brislington 2, Wellington 3

WELLINGTON extended their unbeaten run to four matches with a victory at Brislington yesterday, which was far more emphatic than the final scoreline suggests.

Leigh Robinson’s side dominated the game throughout only for Brislington to score twice in the dying minutes before the final whistle blew.

It was an excellent all-round performance by Wellington with striker partners Shane Kingston and Darren Stone seeing their tireless work rewarded by sharing the goals.

They went ahead after only five minutes as some slick approach work ended with Jon Crowford crossing for Stone to net with a well-placed header.

And the visitors should have had the game wrapped up by half-time as they created a succession of chances.
Scott Holland, who impressed in his new midfield role, had a “goal” disallowed for offside after 18 minutes while Kingston was denied by a fine save from home keeper Nick Yeo and then, when he did beat Yeo, by a
defensive clearance.

It was 41 minutes before Brislington had a shot on goal, keeper Ryan Lewis getting down well to save from Adnan Hiroli.

And it was similar story after the break as Wellington’s slick passing, movement and sheer hard work saw them in total control.

Kingston and Stone linked up to create both the goals which gave them an unassailable lead.

First, after 57 minutes, Kingston produced a clever flick over a defender to play in Stone, who immediately found his partner to guide the ball home.

And then, with eight minutes remaining, skipper Simon Ingram sent away Stone, whose low shot under Yeo saw Kingston slide in to apply the finishing touch.

Stone was injured in the process and forced to limp off.

And that signalled a remarkable end to the game as Brislington’s Kye Mountford hooked home what should have been just a consolation goal in the 88th minute.

But the home side had clearly not read the script and scored again in injury time through sub Mark Chaffey’s
curling shot.

The late goals will have disappointed Wellington, who had looked so secure in defence with Daniel Short outstanding,

Wellington: Ryan Lewis, Craig Mawford, Andy Robertson, Daniel Short, Jack Adams, Jon Crowford, Simon Ingram, Scott Holland, Craig Herrod, Shane Kingston, Darren Stone. Substitutes, Mark Thompson and Luke Desave (used), Aaron Deeks (not used).
