Wellington Sunday XI 300-9 Bagborough Sunday XI 71-3
Despite rain having the final say and rendering the game abandoned as a draw Wellington Sunday XI collected sufficient points to secure the 2021 Taunton and District Sunday League Division A title for a fourth time when they hosted West Somerset League club Bagborough last weekend.
Macaulay Campbell kept up his excellent record of winning the toss this season and opted to bat and it was he and Ben Evett who laid the platform for the Red and Blacks mighty final total of 300-9 as they added 120 opening wicket runs with the skipper making a fluent 43.
Callum Hendy with 12 aided Evett, who was now beginning to motor, to get Wellington past 150 and towards full batting points; from here Jacob Hurry was the partner at the other end for Evett who compiled a champion knock of 140 as he dominated proceedings totally before been out at 213-4.
Arron Campbell with 23, Richard Grinter with 13 and Rob Moysey with 39 propelled Wellington to a mammoth score and it was last pair Cam Sentance and Tom Shannon who got the Red and Blacks to exactly 300.
Bagborough had worked hard despite the runs flowing for Wellington as Goldsworthy took 2-62, M.Jones 2-57 and B.Jones a fine 4-22.
Rain cost the visitors five overs of the forty that they had to try and make the runs and this loss saw the game enter draw territory.
Tom Shannon and Cam Sentance took the new ball for Wellington and bowled, as they had done for the 3rd XI the previous day, with good pace.
Overton and Hitchcott added a solid 47 runs for the opening Bagborough wicket before Shannon took a fine caught and bowled effort to see off the former player for 10.
Hitchcott cracked 41, but was out to a cracking catch from Macaulay Campbell from George Charles-Price and when Tom Hopkins removed Swinburne through Ben Evett’s low dipping catch it was 67-3.
There was time for just four more runs to be added to the Bagborough total before more rain drove the players off and after 16.1 overs the game was abandoned, but the job was done, and success had come the way of the team.
To end the 2021 season the side takes on West Somerset League club Morebath in two non-league matches; at Wellington on Sunday 22nd August (1.30pm start) and at Morebath on Sunday 5th September (1.00pm start).
