Wellington Sunday XI 223-6 Taunton St Andrews Sunday XI 213-5
Wellington Sunday XI are within an ace of securing their fourth Taunton and District Sunday League title following this narrow ten run win over WEPL Premier Two (Bristol and Somerset) division club Taunton St Andrews last weekend.
A 121 run opening stand between Sam Whitefield, who made a fluent 63 (retired not out) and Nathan Roberts, who compiled 56, set Wellington up well with both playing excellently all round the wicket.
Following their departures Wellington did wobble a little in getting to 149-4, but a good knock of 25 from skipper Macaulay Campbell who worked well with Tom Hopkins got his side towards full batting points to go with their full allocation of youth points.
Arron Campbell with 25no and another very good knock from Tyler Fyfe with 11no saw that Wellington’s final total was 223-6.
Adams with 2-18 in four overs was TSA’s most successful bowler.
Martin Jenkins, who had made a lot of runs in this fixture in recent years, set about accumulating once more and when the bad ball came along, he despatched it to the boundary as he hit 101 excellent runs, as with support from N.Yarde (30) and Adams (26) his excellent play got his side toward their required total, although Wellington were fighting with the ball all the while.
Tom Shannon and Cam Sentance took the new ball for Wellington and both bowled with good pace.
With Tom Hopkins joining the attack as first change the focus on young pace bowling was maintained and he took an eventual 1-34 in seven overs and took the catch from Macaulay Campbell’s bowling that saw the back of Jenkins.
Accurate spin from each of Sam Whitefield, Arron Campbell and Ben Evett was the style of bowling in the middle overs for Wellington as they claimed victory and so with it 34 points to TSA’s 20 and with a home game with Bagborough on Sunday 15th August to play the title is in sight for the team.
