Wellington Sunday XI 83 Bridgwater Sunday XI 83

Wellington Sunday XI took on their Bridgwater counterparts in a Taunton and District Sunday League Division A game last Thursday evening at Courtland Road when the T20 format was used and pink balls were in play to aid visibility as the time of year when the nights start to draw in becomes noticeable and all in all it was a corker of a game that ended in a tie when the WEPL Premier Division One lost their last wicket with two balls to spare and the scores level as Wellington collected 16 points to Bridgwater’s 24.

Wellington skipper Arron Campbell opted to bat first on winning the toss and he was part of an opening stand of 32 with Ben Evett who continued his good current form and style of batting with a knock of 22, but when he was stumped the innings turned in favour of the visitors with W.Kelly taking 3-16 as he and his fellow bowlers shot Wellington out for 83 with four overs unused.

Jack Beal with 28 was the only other double figure score for the Red and Blacks as he played well at a time when wickets were tumbling as Duckering with 2-7 also did well with the ball for Bridgwater who would need 84 to win at just over four an over.

After the Bridgwater reply was delayed by a heavy shower Wellington’s attack roared into life as Jack Beal and Will Derrick took the new (pink!) ball and ripped out the Bridgwater top three with their opening bursts of seam bowling.

They gave way to Tyler Fyfe who made a name for himself with two wickets in one over and when Arron Campbell was on a hat-trick Bridgwater were 20-7 and in all sorts of strife.

However through their skipper Bellinger who made a capital 42 they consolidated and then had a chance to win the game from a low base as Sykes-Moore with 14 added 24 for the eighth wicket with his skipper before he was run out, but even at 44-8 Bridgwater were not out of it through the ninth wicket stand of 32 that Rawles and Bellinger composed; it was ended thankfully for Wellington off of the bowling of Rob Moysey through the third of three catches that Macaulay Campbell took on the evening and saw Bridgwater need eight to win with overs running out and only last man W.Kelly was left…

One or two singles came and the last over dawned with Tyler Fyfe to bowl it and with four needed to win – Bellinger got the strike to face the fourth ball with the scores level having got there from runs scored off the first three balls, but looking for the winning hit with the Wellington fielders all in close he only succeeded in lofting the ball to mid-off where Jack Beal was waiting where he took the catch to see that the game ended in a tie.

Four points now separate the two sides and Wellington have four games to play in its eight game schedule that will end with a visit to Bridgwater on Sunday 10th September.
