Wellington Sunday XI 174-4 Wembdon Sunday XI 150-5

Wellington Sunday XI made it six wins out of six in Division A of the Taunton and District Sunday League with this midweek evening win over fellow WEPL Somerset Division side Wembdon on the road last Tuesday as the sides got together following the mutually agreed postponement of their longer form game due to the home side’s SCB KO Cup Final Day commitments.

On a delightful evening for cricket – clear, hot and sunny – Wellington won the toss and batted and first, realising 174-4 from their eighteen over allocation; skipper Arron Campbell and Zandre Swartz were into their stride from the off as they added 98 for the opening wicket with both striking the ball cleanly and crisply – Swartz cracked 67 before being caught on the boundary and Campbell made 43 with some lovely glided shots.

After their departure Nick Crossing with 19, Ben Evett with 11 and Dom Drew with 14no saw their side was well past the threshold for maximum batting points; for Wembdon Hucker with 2-15 was their best bowler and Pigden and Marrs collected a wicket each.

Marrs with 73 was the dominant player for Wembdon as he was part of a 44 run opening stand.

He had the potential to make Wellington’s time in the field uncomfortable, but he was caught in the deep as the five wickets that the Red and Blacks claimed all fell to spin as Dom Drew with 4-26 and Rob Moysey with 1-42 did well with the ball at a crucial time in the game and at 102-5 Wellington were where they wanted to be.

Wembdon rallied late on as Vickery with 38no was the main man in adding 48 for their sixth wicket as the game closed with them 24 short of Wellington’s total and so the reigning champiosn took nineteen points to Wellington’s handy haul of 27.

Wellington’s eyes will be fixed on the outcome of Bridgwater’s T20 visit to North Petherton that was set for the next evening (last Wednesday) as the pathway to the League title becomes a little clearer.
