Lydford 222-6 Wellington 2nd XI 226-5

The blockbuster game of the day in Division Six South of the Somerset League between the top two was everything it promised to be as both sides scored well and the game went down to the 79th of 80 overs and it was Wellington 2nd XI who came out on top in this heavyweight clash and so gave their title chances a real boost with this 31 point five wicket win.

With the weather that caused the 3rd XI’s game to be called off swirling around, that the wicket had been covered saved the day and a start was made just before 2.00pm with no overs having been lost from the match’s allocation and Alex Troake asked the visitors to bat first on winning the toss.

Bunter with 54 and Ryder with 25 added a robust 79 for Lydford’s opening wicket before leg-spin in the form of Rob Moysey and Alex Troake took a hold as they delivered sixteen unbroken overs between them for just 57 runs with a wicket apiece.

Chinnock with a well-made 68 not out saw his side would achieve maximum batting points as he and Williams took their side to 222-6 in 40 overs with Oli Beale taking 2-48 in seven overs and Jack Beal 1-43 in seven overs too.

Thom Trott and James Brackenbury opened the Wellington second string’s reply with a 49 run first wicket stand to which Trott contributed 32 and he is in sight of breaking the all-time runs in a season record for the side.

Brackenbury, who is having a fine debut season for Wellington, was joined by Oli Beale and they added a fluent 120 runs for the second wicket as they both realised 63 for their side as they played crisply and dominated the Lydford attack when batting together.

Williams (2-33) with his left arm seamers posed a danger though as did Bunter (2-39) and the game was coming to a peak with Wellington at 213-4 having seen Jack Beal hit a prime knock of 37 in which he struck the ball in a style that befitted a strong run chase.

Andy Hurry and Macaulay Campbell were the pair that were together at this stage and with Hurry’s deft running and Campbell’s solid shot for six to win the game the deal was sealed with six balls to spare.

An excellent game between the two best sides in the division.
