Wellington 2nd XI 214-4 South Petherton 2nd XI 81

The balance of power in Division Six South of the Somerset League is back with Wellington 2nd XI after another good win last time out as Alex Troake’s side won by 133 runs at home to South Petherton 2nd XI and so collected another points maximum and with Lydford’s game at Taunton Deane 4th XI going down due to the weather the Red and Blacks second string are eight points clear and meet Lydford at home on Saturday 24th July in what could be a title decider.

On this occasion Petherton won the toss and asked Wellington to bat first and with a 116 run opening stand Thom Trott with 49 was part of a great start to the Wellington innings with James Brackenbury as Trott’s golden season with the bat continued.

Brackenbury made a classy 96 and was just short of another league ton this season when we was caught in what was a pleasing knock to watch.

Jacob Hurry’s 13 added good mid-innings runs for the home side.

Full batting points for the team were assured of once more as Alex Dixon smote 37no with two sixes to see that the final score was 212-4 in 40 overs.

Boulton with 2-22 was Petherton’s best offering with the ball in what had been a testing time for them in the field.

J.Neal and Boulton got 21 on the board as Petherton commenced their innings, but when Boulton had gone for 18 with the score at 39-2 it was the start of a slippery slope for Petherton as Tom Shannon and Ian Hewson took the new ball for Wellington.

Hewson delivered accuracy once more with 3-16 in eight overs of unerring medium pace and this was backed up with Lee Nichol’s 8-1-18-3 as well as three catches and skipper Troake’s 8-2-14-3 as his leg spin came to the party too.

Only K.White with 10 got into double figures after Boulton.

The attack was supplemented by Tyler Fyfe, Jake Nichol and Rob Moysey and all was done and dusted with eight overs to spare.

A visit to Staplegrove 2nd XI is next up this weekend.
