Wellington 229-9 Taunton St Andrews 2nd XI 91

Wellington scored a vital West of England Premier League Somerset Division victory at home last weekend when they overwhelmed Taunton St Andrews 2nd XI by a massive 138 runs to secure 22 excellent points as all fell nicely into place.

Arron Campbell won the toss and decided to bat first with Sam Whitefield and Paul Short opening up for the Red and Blacks as they added a capital 31 runs first up; this start was somewhat curbed by Williams who took an eventual 9-0-49-2 as he took two wickets at that score.

Sam Whitefield and his skipper took the score up a notch or two with Whitefield making 32 before been third out with the score on 61 with five fours.

Ben Evett, batting at number five for Wellington, made a crisp 22 as the three figure mark was reached when the keeper batsman was caught off of leg spinner Yarde who claimed 3-32 in seven overs.

All this time skipper Campbell was making 34 in 53 balls as he marshalled the innings well hitting five fours; when he was out at 117-5 the Wellington middle and lower order took a firm grip on the game with Luke Desave’s 44 and Jack Beal’s 11 adding excellent runs in the second half of the innings.

At 194-9 Wellington saw last pair Ryan Aingworth and Macaulay Campbell add a robust 35 run unbroken stand for the last wicket that saw Aingworth strike three fours and three sixes in making 37no from just 27 balls to set the TSA second string, who accessed this level of play by virtue of winning the Somerset League in 2019, 230 to win.

Their reply did not go well as they fell away to 33-5 in the face of Luke Desave and Will Derrick’s fine opening burst with the new ball.

This passage of play gave Desave 1-23 in eight overs and Derrick a good 3-18 in six overs.

Draper with 17 was the TSA top scorer on the day as Neil Hendy with 4-26 and Macaulay Campbell with 1-16 in four overs wrapped matters up with runs and overs to spare to give Wellington a seventh place after the weekend’s action and a 37 point gap to the Saints reserve side who are in ninth place on 48 points.
