Wellington 130-8 Trull A 114
Wellington have given themselves a chance to win the Baker Cup’s Terry Mockridge Memorial Shield for a third time in thirteen seasons after reaching 2021’s final at Staplegrove CC on Monday 5th July where they will play either Taunton Deane A, North Petherton or Taunton A.
Arron Campbell’s team achieved this chance through seeing off Somerset League Premier Division side Trull on their own turf last Monday evening in a game that the Red and Blacks were already hosting on the Competition’s behalf.
Choosing to bat first saw skipper Campbell and Alex Sparks open up and between them they laid into the Trull opening attack with Campbell striking 13 and looking in excellent form before he found the mid wicket fielder.
Sparks and Ben Evett combined to take the Wellington score to 61 when Evett with 23 well made runs was LBW to the tried and tested left arm spin of Stone (5-0-16-2) and when Sparks was out for 25 to another left arm slow bowler in Forkin (5-1-16-2) Wellington started to slip to 86-6, but for a second Monday evening in a week Callum Hendy was one of the players that hoisted Wellington’s score towards a more desirable level as the teenager was last out from the last ball of the Red and Blacks innings having made a crucial 25.
In tandem with Ryan Aingworth who struck 23 Hendy added 36 for the seventh Wellington wicket and a final score of 130 was perhaps less than it may have been given the start, but it was more than it may have been as well.
Gibbs and Parker started the Trull A reply well as they added 33 opening wicket runs, but the introduction of Rob Moysey’s leg spin (4-0-27-1) saw a chink be exposed for Wellington as he bowled Gibbs for 19 and with Jack Beal removing Clark leg before it was 34-2.
Stone joined Parker and they settled into a 53 run third wicket stand for their side that incorporated plenty of singles and some excellent boundary shots too as the Trull A score rose to 87-2 when Ryan Aingworth produced the match winning spell of 3.5-0-17-3 that included the wickets of Stone for 32 and Parker for 28 and at 90-4 with the overs now beginning to run out the game was finely balanced.
Luke Desave (5-0-28-1) and Jack Beal (5-0-31-3) returned for their second spells and Trull A were rushed out for 114 in 19.5 as they lost seven wickets for 27 runs to propel the Red and Blacks to what should be a good final match up whoever they get.
