Wellington 3rd XI 212-3 Taunton Deane 5th XI 181
After losing to Ilton 2nd XI on the recent Bank Holiday Sunday Wellington 3rd XI were bottom of Division Seven Red of the Somerset League, but Richard Henwood’s charges are now fourth in the nine team division following this second win in a row at Castle School in Taunton last weekend as full points were claimed.
At the same time as the Red and Blacks first team were scoring well across town at Deane’s main ground James Brackenbury and Trevor Brooks were compiling an opening stand of 202 against Deane’s fifth string with Brackenbury making a debut century to the tune of 126 as he played a majestic knock with 20 fours and two sixes.
He cut and pulled the ball well all day when batting was the thing to do in the hot weather that was the case on the day.
The pair were not disturbed until the latter overs of the Wellington innings as Brooks was out in the last over for 60.
E.Goss with 8-2-25-3 bowled well for his side on a day when wickets were hard to come by.
When Tyler Fyfe removed Crosland early on Wellington’s third string had a foothold in the game, but P.Goss with an eventual 77 and Matthews with a robust 19 were scoring at a good rate and giving Wellington something to think on.
Cam Sentance (3-29 in six overall) got the telling wicket of Matthews and some excellent off spin from Alex Derbridge (2-27 in eight) stemmed the Deane middle order, but their skipper Goss was still there and scoring decently.
There was a wicket for Connor Wickenden with a classic stumping that James Brackenbury effected and Wellington were chipping away towards victory.
E.Goss with 14 and Jarrett with 13 provided some moments of peril for Wellington as they sought the killer blow to secure the victory and through Darren Davis, Cam Sentance and Tyler Fyfe all coming back for second spell and with Richard Henwood getting in on the act too the deal was sealed by a margin of 31 runs.
