Wellington 244-6 Taunton Deane 2nd XI 245-8

Wellington scored well at Taunton Deane last weekend when they made their most imperious batting display of the season in taking on the home Club’s 2nd XI in the Somerset Division of the West of England Premier League, but some robust hitting from Red and Blacks old boy Russ Jones saw his side over the line having arrived at the crease with his side pretty much needing to double their score.

Tom Chambers and Sam Whitefield added a crisp 71 runs for Wellington’s opening wicket after Arron Campbell had won the toss and chosen to bat; Chambers with 28 was first out and a base to go on from had been set.

Alex Sparks joined Whitefield and they more than doubled the score with Sparks cracking 48 with six fours and a six and with Whitefield compiling a fine 58 before being run out at 149-3 the innings was developing nicely.

Arron Campbell with 19 delivered good middle order runs for his team and it was an unbroken seventh wicket stand of 37 between Luke Desave and Neil Hendy that took Wellington to 244-6 at the break with 37no and 16no respectively that were made in good time;  a total of 31 balls faced had realised 53 runs for Wellington.

Williams-Pritchard with 7-0-38-2 was the most successful Deane bowler on a perfect day for batters.

The Deane second string’s innings was one of solid contributions to get to 119-5 that saw Neil Hendy with 9-1-28-4 be in controlled and accurate mood with the ball for Wellington, but when Russ Jones came to the crease he smote 75 in 44 balls with six fours and four sixes as he and Lewis-Oliver with 42 added 118 for their side’s sixth wicket to change the complexion of the match.

Will Derrick took two wickets, Luke Desave and Macaulay Campbell one each and although Deane lost some ground before they got to the required total they reached it with ten balls to spare and so collected 19 points to Wellington’s nine.

Wellington are in eighth place and host Taunton St Andrews 2nd XI on Saturday 19th June and have a nineteen point margin over the Saints who are in ninth place.
