Minehead 115-9 Wellington 117-8

Wellington secured a two wicket win with five balls to spare in the Somerset Division of the West of England Premier League last weekend as they got past the low, but testing total that visitors Minehead had set them as some powerful counter attacking play from Ryan Aingworth and great resistance from Will Derrick saw that their ninth wicket stand of 47 was what won the game for the Red and Blacks.

Arron Campbell won a good toss as the previous day’s intense rain had made bowling first the desirable activity and so he asked Minehead to take first knock.

Luke Desave and Will Derrick took the new ball for Wellington and the breakthrough came when Neil Hendy accepted a chance from Desave to send Buchanan back to the pavilion for 13 and at 22-1 a real danger man was out of the way.

Further wickets for Desave (9-2-22-3) and Arron Campbell (9-2-17-2) sent the Seasiders sliding to 52-7, but they found some robustness through Marsh’s 23 and E.Taylor’s 29no that eventually raised their total to 115-9 in 45 overs.

Neil Hendy and Ryan Aingworth claimed two wickets apiece and with Macaulay Campbell closing out the innings with a short controlled spell Wellington had done well in the field with Campbell taking a fine catch on the boundary, Ben Evett keeping wicket well with a catch and a stumping and Alex Sparks taking two catches.

It was 116 to win in 45 overs after tea.

Minehead came at Wellington hard as was to be expected, but young Nathan Roberts with a solid knock of 16 withstood what came his way, however at 43-6 Wellington were in a spot of bother as Harding, Darrell and Bowditch all did well with the ball for Minehead.

Luke Desave and Ben Evett started the mission to put the Wellington innings back on a more even keel as they added 24 seventh wicket runs to get the score to 67-7 when Evett was out having batted patiently.

But when he was out only three more runs were added until Desave was out for a fine 23 and at 70-8 Wellington were still nearly fifty short of their target with two wickets remaining and Ryan Aingworth and Will Derrick at the crease.

Slowly and cautiously at first the pair assessed the situation and collected ones and twos and as confidence grew and three figures were in sight Aingworth launched a spectacular assault on Minehead spinner Richards as he took him for three sixes in the 43rd over of the game to tie the scores.

A single was collected off the first ball of the last over to leave Aingworth on 34no and Derrick on 11no and with it a memorable victory and 15 valuable points.
