Wellington 2nd XI 98-5 Fitzhead Crusaders 101-3
Wellington 2nd XI lost this Somerset Cricket Board Minor Knockout Cup First Round match at home last Monday evening with just one over left in the game as Somerset League Division Five side Fitzhead Crusaders secured a place in the next round by seven wickets, but the match was a closer affair than that.
Wellington were asked to bat first on losing the toss and saw Thom Trott and Callum Hendy add eleven first wicket runs before Trott was first out for the Red and Blacks.
Hendy with 11 and Jacob Hurry with 12 took Wellington close to a total of forty, but at 39-4 the innings was in need of some consolidation and it came from Lewis Sparks who hit 25no in firm style and Rob Moysey with 23 as the pair added 43 for the fifth wicket.
Ian Hewson joined Sparks and with 6no took Wellington’s second string to a final total of 98-5 in 20 overs with R.Morrish with 4-0-8-2 doing best with the ball for the visiting side.
To win Fitzhead Crusaders would need to score at five an over and although not losing a wicket until the score was on 51 when Seward was well caught behind by Jacob Hurry for 14 Wellington were certainly in with a good shout here for run scoring was not easy as a great opening seam burst from both Macaulay Campbell and Jake Nichol showed.
Moysey captured 4-0-20-3 as a fine boundary catch from Thom Trott saw the visitors score hit 71-3, but Oliver with a final personal total of 64no found a solid ally in D.Morrish and with it a place in the second round of this competition.
