Bridgwater 2nd XI 157 Wellington 158-6

Wellington made a fantastic start to their season in the West of England Premier League’s Somerset Division over the May Day Bank Holiday weekend with this well measured four wicket success over Bridgwater’s 2nd XI on the road as they crossed the line for 19 points with five overs left.

With COVID19 protocols still needing to be observed the host Club had all that was required in place and a safe environment was on offer for the game to occur.

A good toss was won by Arron Campbell and he asked the home team to bat and they commenced their innings in good style with Bellinger and Skidmore adding 51 opening wicket runs before the innings was blown off course when Jack Beal joined the attack and ripped through the line up as he took an overall haul of 6-14 in nine brilliant overs of left arm seam and he was in the zone for sure.

Adding in two catches for good measure saw Beal had a great day.

Will Derrick removed Skidmore for 33 as the Bridgwater top scorer was caught by Luke Desave.

Ben Evett kept well to achieve two catches behind the sticks as Neil Hendy with 3-30 in 7.2 overs saw that the home side were bowled out in 42.2 of their 45 overs which represents a reduction from the regular fifty overs per innings due to the requirements to sanitise during play.

Sixteen runs were on the board towards the Wellington reply when the first wicket was lost, but Tom Chambers and Sam Whitefield got the Red and Blacks score pushing towards fifty when Whitefield was out caught behind for 15 at 44-2.

Chambers was making a good knock in compiling 34 with six fours, but was out LBW at 65-3.

Oli Beale was at the crease and stroked eleven before being bowled and the same fate befell Luke Desave, but not before both players had hit a couple of fours each.

The Wellington score was 83-5 when Desave was out and the game was at a crucial juncture.

The major work left to do was performed by Paul Short who made a fine 39 not out with six fours as he and Arron Campbell with 24 (three fours) added 79 cracking sixth wicket runs as they dominated matters for Wellington.

Campbell was out with six needed, but Ben Evett joined Short and the job was done with five overs to spare and a fine nineteen points were secured to Bridgwater 2nd XI’s five.
