Weston Super Mare 3rd XI 153 Wellington 2nd XI 159-6
Wellington 2nd XI scored a really good win on the road at Weston Super Mare 3rd XI over the Bank Holiday weekend as they came away with a four wicket win, 35 points and a chance of securing a finishing position in Division Five of the Somerset League that may see them survive at this level for 2020 given that the two divisions directly above them are light on teams through withdrawals and resignations.
Mid table Weston Super Mare decided to bat first on winning the toss and their progress was steady in an innings that occupied all but 5 balls of the 45 overs on offer.
F.Bemand with 22, Trego with 35 and J.Mayo with 20 were the home side’s best offerings with the bat, but Wellington took wickets at a good rate with Tom Shannon’s opening burst with the new ball seeing him take 2-19.
Jake Nichol was not successful on this occasion, but still bowled with accuracy all the same.
Tom Perry and Oli Beale took mid-innings wickets as Wellington’s second string continued to press for full batting points and it was skipper Alex Troake with 4-16 in eight good overs of leg spin that sent the home side towards been all out and Trevor Brooks with 1-20 in 7.1 overs sealed the deal with the ball for the visitors.
Wellington made good progress towards the 154 they needed for a third win of the season as Trevor Brooks and Callum Hendy added 70 for the first wicket with Hendy making 19.
Oli Beale with 14 and Mark Salter with 15 supported half-centurion Brooks to push Wellington onwards to a good success.
Brooks was out for 54 at 134-4, but Gus Steele and Tom Perry concluded matters with five overs to spare with Perry hitting a six to end the game.
Wellington host second placed Taunton Deane 3rds on Saturday 31st August and the game is set up well.
