Chard 249-7 Wellington 253-7

Wellington made a fine run chase at home in the Somerset Division of the West of England Premier League last weekend as the Red and Blacks chased down second placed side Chard’s 249-7 with seven balls to spare and so be sixth with five to play, complete the season’s double over the South Somerset side and be just 16 points off of second place in what is going to be a division where nothing will be decided until the last day of the season.

Although Frome will be crowned champions sooner rather than later the other nine teams are compactly place and little separates Chard themselves with 165 points and Taunton Deane 2nd XI with 122 points.

Chard’s innings was mastered by their opener Mawdsley who carried his bat for 121 not out.

It was his knock alone that carried his side to their total as their score had dipped to 130-6 as Jack Beal, Neil Hendy and Arron Campbell each took two wickets, but only one more fell as 119 runs were added by Mawdsley and C.Scott who cracked 54 in 49 balls and latterly Chard keeper Warren.

Wellington started their chase with a wicket been lost with the score at 4, but Tom Chambers and Sam Whitefield got the score near the half century mark with Chambers making 19.

From then on excellent contributions from all batters saw Wellington close in on and ultimately surpass the challenging Chard total as Arron Campbell led the way with 60, Sam Whitefield made 32, Thom Trott contributed 17, Ben Evett realised 27 and Jack Beal hit five sixes in his 49 and the deal was sealed by Rob Moysey and Ollie Wilkins with 7no and 21no respectively.

Wellington took 19 points for their efforts in a game that saw the season’s Sponsors Lunch take place and what good entertainment was on offer for those who have invested in the Club for 2019.
