Wellington U11 Reds 269-5 Taunton St Andrews U11 ‘A’ 284-7
Second placed Wellington Reds entertained table toppers Taunton St Andrews ‘A’ at Sampford Arundel on Sunday morning and were only just denied taking their 100% record in a fine game of cricket under sunny skies.
Charlie Crossley and William Lyon-Taylor took to the crease for the hosts and were watchful in adding 11 runs before Oliver Hutchings and Charlie Young found things difficult against the ‘Saints’ county attack.
Jonah Richardson and Liam Buddin then pressed the accelerator peddle as they added 25 unanswered runs, before penultimate pair, skipper Atticus Adams and Oscar Milton , took the score to 238.
Wellington’s final pairing of Thomas Gendall and Will Crossley pressurised the bowlers and took a superb 31 to post a competitive 269, which is the biggest total recorded against St Andrews all season.
Adams and Charlie Crossley took the new ball and both took a wicket early on to keep the runs to 218 after 4 overs.
Somerset’s Theo Lamey then added 37 runs with Nick Watson to put the game the visitors way before a wicket for Young and a double wicket maiden for Hutchings kept the Reds in the hunt as the score reached 267 with the last pair at the wicket.
Wellington couldn’t get the breakthrough trying 4 different bowlers in the last 4 overs as the league champions edged home by 15 runs.
Wellington will now have to win their last game, at Taunton Vale next Sunday and hope other results go their way as they look to secure the runners up spot, in the U11 West ‘A’ division.
