Wellington U13 99-9 Minehead U13 61 all out

A second five wicket haul for Wellington U13s in a week brought them their 1st victory of the season, when Minehead were the visitors in a game played at Sampford Arundel on Friday evening.

Having first use Wellington had only reached 10 when James Weymouth spooned a catch and when fellow opener, skipper Tom Hopkins, was given out LBW with the score on 24 and the signs were not good.

This brought the two Olivers, Hansard and Williams together and they formed the backbone of the innings, taking the total to 61 – 2 with plenty of overs in hand and a sizeable total was their for the making.

A mini collapse saw Hansard, Williams and Oliver Buddin all depart quickly, so it was left to Lewie Harrison to knit the tail together with help from Ned Hillman getting late order runs and a total of 99 – 9 was posted.

Minehead shared the wickets amongst 8 bowlers with the pick being Somerset’s Joel Savage who took 2 – 11 from his 3 overs.

The hosts were straight on the money in the field as the option of opening with spin proved fruitful as Weymouth sent both openers packing one with a sharp catch behind taken by Williams and a further run out, had the seasiders reeling at 12-3.

Archie Lyon-Taylor continued with the slow bowling to add a further 2 wickets to his 6 taken on Wednesday evening and at 26-5 Wellington had a firm grip on the game.

Oliver Groves for Minehead was the shining batsman on the night and looked in no trouble but at the other end Weymouth returned to clean up the lower middle order returning 5 for 10 in his 4 overs and once Groves had to retire on 30 the end wasn’t long in coming and a 38 run victory for Wellington was thoroughly deserved.
