Taunton St Andrews U15 83 all out Wellington U15’s 83-6

Wellington U15s beat the weather, but couldn’t quite beat the opposition when they tied with top of the table Taunton St Andrews at The Wyvern Club on Sunday morning.

Having lost out to Taunton Deane in the county cup semi – final narrowly the previous week, they will feel that St Andrews who had a 100% record going into this game were there for the taking in this nail biting finish.

‘Saints’ had 1st use and were soon in trouble as Olly Hunt and Max Brodie took the new ball to good effect in both keeping the runs down on a damp pitch and taking wickets as Hunt with 2 left the score at 19-2 with a third of the overs used.

Tom Shannon joined the attack to quickly snap up a wicket as did Callum Kinnear and Alex Derbidge as the Taunton side limped to 47 – 6 with only 5 overs remaining.

Derbidge added 2 further scalps and a wicket apiece for Ben Wardell and Daniel Thorne, was offset as Ben Davies for the home team added 21 individual runs,to post 83 as the last wicket fell on the last ball.

Wellington openers Charlie Hawkings and Jacob Hurry looked in little trouble as they took the score to 47 without loss with still 10 overs remaining and appeared to be setting the innings up for a comfortable victory, but once they both perished with the score on 48, runs dried up, and panic set in.

Hunt, Derbidge and Shannon were all run out and only Ben Wardell with 19 could take the visitors to within sight of victory.

Once he was out, Callum Kinnear (10 n.o.) was left at the crease with James Weymouth (0 n.o.) as 2 runs were needed from the last ball, but only a scrambled single left the scores tied at the death.
