Wellington 2nd XI 203-5 Leigh-on-Mendip 184
Wellington 2nd XI won for only the second time in their last 21 Somerset League games as they made the long trek to Leigh-on-Mendip last weekend and came back with 35 most welcome points and are in seventh place in the SCL’s Division Five.
Macaulay Campbell was in charge of the team on the day and he was asked to bat after the home side won the toss and saw Trevor Brooks and Callum Hendy, who are becoming a good opening partnership for the side, put on 73 for the first wicket as Hendy made 43 with a six before been first out.
Brooks made 28 before been second out with the team’s score on 80; at 101-4 Wellington’s second string were in the middle of their innings and the second half went their way happily as Gus Steele with 33no, Will Weatherill with 15 and a triumphant return to the Club for Kevin Symons with 52 saw the side top 200 and so collect maximum batting points.
Leigh-on-Mendip, near Radstock, were always in the hunt in this game as S.Gould with 41 and A.Brownlow with 31 gave them hope of their first win of the season too.
Wellington chipped away at taking wickets all the time though and this saw Gus Steele and another returnee to the Club in Darren Davis pick up one each, but it was Alex Troake, yet another recent returnee to the Club, who spun Wellington towards their first win of 2019 with 4-39 in nine good overs of leg spin and with new acquisition Andy Groves taking 4-30 in 6.2 overs on debut it was a full bag of points for Wellington compared to 14 for the home side.
