Ladies Section Make Their Competitive Bow
Wellington CC’s Ladies Section took to the field at Somerset CCC for their competitive bow in the game when a team of six took part in the Somerset Cricket Board’s ‘Bubbles and Bats’ Softball Tournament on the evening of Monday 10th September when the hallowed turf was portioned into four playing areas writes David Derrick.
Along with seven other sides competing in two pools of four the Ladies played a format where three pairs batted for two overs each and every one bowled one over and scoring was done to the ‘Barrington Rules’ method where each side starts on 200 runs and loses five runs per wicket lost.
Wellington played Beaminster CC, then Wembdon CC and finally Wiveliscombe CC and using all that had been learnt in the Active8 sessions that had been undertaken in the summer season the team put in some good performances with both bat and ball and in the field; particularly noticeable was an alertness to backing up when the ball had gone towards the boundary and was on its way to the wicket keeper.
In all these games the Red and Blacks (playing in pink!) were competitive and played well with their closest game being against Wiveliscombe when six runs was all that separated the teams.
Wembdon Ladies won the pool with some excellent all round play as their having played the game for a relatively long time shone through.
They have expressed an interest in playing Wellington Ladies next summer in friendly matches and it is hoped to play on a home and away basis.
For now 2018 has been an excellent first season of action for the squad and detailing the aspirations of the group and fitting them in with what is available in the game locally will be the focus of close season work with the aim of seeing things go from strength to strength in 2019; further integration into the Club’s playing framework will follow too.
Many thanks go to all who have had a hand in this strand of the Club’s playing operations and who have made it such a success.
Those who took part were…
Emma Williams, Molly Hines, Megan Beale (Captain), Megan Drawert, Karen Taylor-Worth and Lucy Hill
