Wellington 2nd XI were involved in a great game in Division Four of the Somerset League last weekend when they made the long journey to Kilmington and Stourton for their penultimate game of the season and came away with a four run loss having chased hard all the way the 195 they needed to win.

K and S opted to bat first on winning the toss and saw Lewis Sparks and Ian Hewson deliver an eighteen over opening burst on the reel and boss the opening exchanges.

Sparks took 2-30 in nine overs as he obtained swing and seam in good quantities to pose many questions.

Hewson went unrewarded, but let just 27 runs go in nine overs as he was economical and accurate.

For K and S Wakeling with 53 and Heard with 37 were their mainstays with the bat.

The home side’s middle order found Tyler Fyfe with his left arm swing in good form as he took 2-30 in seven overs and it was great to see Rob Moysey claim 5-20 in nine overs as he showed that he is getting back to fitness where bowling is concerned ref the injury he suffered in May.

Trevor Brooks joined the attack late on and saw out the innings with three good overs of controlled off spin.

Mark Salter kept well for Wellington having to deal with seam and spin and the changes in the attack that took place.

Wellington’s second string would need 195 to win after tea.

Nathan Roberts and Trevor Brooks added 53 runs first up with out issue and it was only when left arm spinner Lapham joined the attack that K and S got into the game with the ball as he bowled Roberts for 15.

Robin Davies joined Brooks and added 46 for the second wicket to take Wellington towards three figures as Brooks made 51 before been caught as he tried to hit over the top.

At 109-4 the game was moving towards K and S, but Davies with 58 played a crisp knock and was in the sort of form that was going to win the game for Wellington if he stayed around, but he was bowled round his legs and this saw the Red and Blacks need to dig deep; Rob Moysey’s 20 was a good addition to his team’s total.

Ian Hewson did all that he could to get his side to a win as he hit the ball cleanly and handsomely in making 27no and at 175-9 he was joined by David Derrick and, although their last wicket partnership of 15 was just not quite enough, it was entertaining and took the game down to the last ball with four to tie or six to win, but Standfield with 4-28 in nine good overs was up to the task and bowled a good dipping ball that went between Hewson and the leg stump and was collected by the keeper.

Wellington took 18 points from the game to K and S’s 33 and Wellington’s season will end at home to Peasedown St John on Saturday 1st September in a game that will begin at 11.30am to facilitate PSJ’s long journey from the Bath area as their awards event for 2018 is being held that evening.
