Shapwick and Polden 2nd XI 173 Wellington 174-3
Wellington are back up to third in the Premier Division of the Somerset League following this comfortable and comprehensive win over Shapwick and Polden 2nd XI last time out as Arron Campbell’s team was in good form as a unit all afternoon.
S and P won the toss and opted to bat first and were soon in a pickle against Luke Desave and Jack Beal who reduced the home side to 44-5 as they produced figures of 2-24 and 3-40 in nine overs respectively.
The home side, 2017’s SCL Division Two winners, have struggled at the higher level, but had won at Wellington back in June and through their skipper Spencer retrieved the situation as he made a decent 52 and was supported by Smith with 30 and Harvey with 22, but there was little else really.
Arron Campbell and Thom Trott were controlled in their spells of spin and seam and it was Pete Sanderson’s slower style of bowling that wrapped up what amounted to decent recovery from S and P to be all out for 173 with one ball to spare as Sanderson took 3-16 in four and a bit overs.
Wellington’s path to victory was carved, initially, by Tom Chambers and Sam Whitefield who added 30 up front before Chambers was out for 25 made in just 32 balls.
D.Rudge was the S and P bowler that removed Chambers and he took another wicket next ball to make Wellington be 30-2 and was it game on?
Not really was the case as Sam Whitefield marshalled matters with 53no and with Arron Campbell making 21 and Mark Bray’s 30no both been of value to the team as Wellington raced home with seven overs to spare as S and P bowled wildly and inaccurately at times.
