Wellington 3rd XI 300-5 Langport 2nd XI 90
Wellington 3rd XI completed its second seasonal double of 2018 in Division Seven South of the Somerset League and so consolidated it’s safe and secure mid-table position on a hot day at Sampford Arundel CC as full points were claimed.
Although the Red and Blacks third string made a fine total in the end they were 8-3 as Roberts and Banks took the lead early on having seen Wellington win the toss and bat.
However Sam Nelson was soon cracking the ball to the boundary as he made a second successive half century for the side, totalling 74 all told as he added 59 for the fourth wicket with skipper Des Campbell who made a good 18 as Wellington rallied.
Richard Henwood, who is enjoying a fine season with the bat, joined Nelson and assisted in adding 91 runs for the fifth wicket and then powered on with Dave Luxton to add an unbeaten 155 for the sixth wicket to see that Wellington ended on a mighty 300-5 at tea with Henwood striking 84no with one six and Luxton making a fine 60no with three sixes.
Banks ended with 1-20 in eight overs and Roberts 1-22 from same as only Swaine was successful for Langport with the ball after the openers.
Analysis of Langport’s season with the bat is that it has not been a happy one as they have passed 100 only twice, but, on this occasion at least, Brister and Banks held Wellington at bay and added 27 runs to boot for the first wicket, but once Des Campbell had trapped Brister in front it was a procession to 36-7 as Andy Hurry took 5-11 in six excellent overs of seam bowling and found himself on a hat-trick to boot.
Olly Hunt and Nathan Roberts joined the attack for a second time and along with a second wicket for Des Campbell reduced Langport to 58-9 and the end was nigh, but to their credit last pair Roberts and Miller added a nagging last wicket stand of 32 to keep Wellington in the field longer than they had planned despite both Connor Wickenden and David Derrick nearly snaring the last scalp.
In the end Jacob Hurry did the necessary with 4.5 overs left as Richard Henwood caught Miller for 12 leaving Roberts on a decent 21no; the fine catch from Nick Roberts at square leg is worthy of mention too.
