Broadway and Horton 2nd XI 201-5 Wellington 3rd XI 205-6

In some of the hottest conditions of this excellent summer season Wellington 3rd XI made up for their opening day defeat in South Somerset with this four wicket win over Broadway and Horton’s reserve side in Division Seven South of the Somerset League; with the Club’s main playing facility having become available it gave the Red and Blacks third string a chance to play at headquarters so to speak and it was the visitors who opted to bat first on winning the toss.

41 were added for the opening wicket before Oli Beale’s clever back flick of a ball coming in to the non-striker’s end made sure that Driskel was run out for 18 and soon after Andy Hurry had seen the back of Watkins well caught at slip by Dave Luxton, B and H were 42-2 and when Hurry trapped Cook LBW Wellington were on the up at 52-3 being the visitors score.

But P.Andrews with 50, Knight with 78no and Wilson with 22 added nearly 150 runs for the loss of just two wickets as only father and son combination Richard and Ryan Henwood took wickets other than Andy Hurry and it was just over two hundred to win for Wellington after tea.

It was not a good start as Driskel and Knight turned their skills to bowling and Wellington were 19-3 and latterly 38-4 despite Dave Luxton getting a start.

However through Richard Henwood and Andy Hurry Wellington got past double figures with Henwood making a capital 54 before been caught at point.

Tyler Fyfe joined Hurry and got the score to 117 before he was out and this was a crossroads in the team’s collective innings and the way ahead was richly paved for the side as an unbroken seventh wicket stand of 88, which is a new record for the team, took place; Ryan Henwood with solid and stoic defence allowed Andy Hurry to blossom to the extent that he hit 98no and Wellington got home with a full six overs left unused as Hurry pinched singles and twos at will as well as finding the boundary often too to give Wellington’s third string 30 good points, a second win in a row and first at home in 2018.
