Peasedown St John 274 Wellington 2nd XI 260

Wellington 2nd XI came within an ace of recording their first win in Division Four of the Somerset League for 2018 last weekend when they made the long and detailed trip to the Bath area to take on Peasedown St John and lost by just fourteen runs as they chased a massive 275 to win.

PSJ only really got going towards their large total through Lock who made a fine 92 batting at number three… Indeed Wellington’s second string had the home side at 79-4, but Lock and Mitchell adding 115 for the fifth wicket took the steam out of the start that the side had been given with the ball by Macaulay Campbell and Tyler Fyfe who took three top order wickets between them.

Spin in the form of Oli Beale and Ben Evett broke the best PSJ stand of the day as just cited and with Ryan Adams snaring a victim too Wellington had taken seven wickets despite the large total that had to be chased after tea.

PSJ’s strength was with the bat for they failed to get more than two wickets by the time that Wellington had made 169 as Mark Salter, Rob Moysey and Aks Latifi all got stuck in; Salter had to retire hurt, but was able to come back later on and had 24no to his credit as he tried in vain to get his side over the line in the last throes of the innings.

Moysey made a fine 58 as he confirmed his fitness to bat and Latifi made an equally fine 57.

Wellington’s middle order continued the good fight as Mark Bray with 23 and Lewis Sparks ad Ryan Adams who made 14 each played well and with PSJ conceding nearly 50 extras Wellington were closing in on the total required, but it was just not quite to be for the team as they were all out for a valiant 260 with two balls unused.

PSJ took full points and now top the division and Wellington remain bottom having collected 17 points, but with some real hope that a revival will start soon…
