Shapwick and Polden 2nd XI 178-7 Wellington 120

Wellington have slipped back to third place in the Premier Division of the Somerset League having not developed their good start with the bat chasing a useful, but not overbearing target of 179 last weekend as the team lost all ten wickets for just 58 runs after a fine start had been made by openers Robin Davies (32) and Neil Hendy (10) as they put on 62.

Even despite two more wickets been lost, at 104-3 through good work from Sam Whitefield (13) and skipper Arron Campbell (18) the game was still Wellington’s to take, but the Red and Blacks slithered away to be 120 all out with a massive 14 overs unused.

With fine figures of 4-31 in nine overs and 3-3 in just four overs Lang and Luckins saw that Shapwick and Polden 2nd XI took the honours.

Earlier in the day the visitors to Courtland Road had won the toss and opted to bat first and made a slow, but solid start against Will Derrick (2-22 in seven) and Ian Hewson (0-14 in seven).

The first wicket for Wellington came when Jack Beal bowled Rudge with the score on 18.

Luckins and Haggett developed matters as seam gave way to spin and back again with wickets coming the way of Sam Whitefield and Neil Hendy and at 84-4 S and P’s second string were running out of overs, but a punchy stand of 68 for the fifth wicket between Smith (55) and Spencer (30) saw that the visitors were going to have more to bowl at than they might have had, but 179 to win was not going to be daunting to the Red and Blacks and they got away well as S and P’s attack was quick, but wayward and sent down a right old assortment of wides and no balls as well as balls to score from and Robin Davies certainly did so, but from 62-0 to 120 all out sees Wellington be some 44 points behind leaders Street with Taunton Deane 2nd XI in between them.
