Chard 129-5 Wellington 113-5
Wellington were edged out by just sixteen runs in this Terry Mockridge Memorial Shield Quarter Final last Monday evening when the Red and Blacks travelled to the unbeaten leaders of the WEPL Somerset Division for some evening T20 action.
Chard opted to bat first and saw Dening and Wells-Burr get away to a 59 run opening wicket stand; this was ended when Macaulay Campbell caught the latter named player off of Wellington captain Arron CampbellĀ who took 1-23 in five good overs of off spin.
Dening was the rock around which the Chard innings was built on as he made a fine 61, but Wellington fought hard to get back and did so through Sam Whitefield’s decent five over burst of finger spin letting just 22 runs go.
Jack Beal with 2-33 in five overs did well as his alternative angle of left arm over was rewarded as a run out and a wicket for Will Derrick concluded Wellington’s taking of Chard wickets.
Arron Campbell and Sam Whitefield got Wellington away well as they made 26 and 46 respectively and were joined in good batting by Mark Bray with 22, but the middle innings bowling of Clancy (1-15 in four overs) and Garner (3-13 in four overs) checked the Wellington assault on the 130 that they needed to win to the extent that the Red and Blacks fell 16 short of the home team’s total.
