Ashbrittle 130-8 Wellington 101-7
Wellington will contest the Terry Mockridge Memorial Shield going forward after losing this Baker Cup First Round match at fellow SCL Premier Division side Ashbrittle last Monday evening when the Red and Blacks ended some 29 short of their hosts score after they had opted to bat first.
Grant Davey and Andy Hill put on a good opening stand of 57 that was ended when Jake Nichol bowled Davey for 21.
Hill was dismissed for 35 when Will Derrick ran him out and with Jack Beal getting in amongst the wickets as he took 2-25 in five overs there was late success for Wellington as Sam Whitefield with 2-30 in five overs and two run outs as well saw that Ashbrittle closed on 130-8 in their 20 overs after all but one of their top order made it to double figures.
Ben Evett and Aks Latifi put on 19 for Wellington’s opening wicket, but when Latifi was run out the Red and Blacks found it hard to get the momentum going again and at 43-5 needed to react; a 49 run stand for the sixth wicket between Miles Cave (27) and Joe Horne (24) saw Wellington get towards three figures, but the bowling of Alfie Venner-Woodcock who let just 13 runs go in five overs and Charlie Sharland who took 2-20 in five overs just did not let Wellington get up the head of steam needed to score at the 6.5 runs per over they needed to win.
Ashbrittle will travel to play Taunton A in the Cup Quarter Finals with Wellington travelling to Chard in the Shield Quarter Finals; both games will take place on Monday 4th June…
