Wellington 197 Wembdon 202-7 (by Alex Sparks)
Wellington finished their season with an away trip to Wembdon and came up just short in another close game.
Visiting Wembdon’s new facility for the first time, Wellington won the toss and chose to bat.
With Wellington already resigned to relegation some changes were made to the batting order and Ian Hewson & Will Derrick went out to open up.
Both showed early promise before being dismissed to leave the side at 22-2
Kayden Hine came in and steadied the ship at number four and he was well supported by Sam Whitefield with the pair putting on 86 for the 5th wicket.
Whitefield was dismissed for 34, but Hine carried on to reach his first league fifty of the season before being dismissed for 55.
Contribution from Alex Sparks (21), Ben Evett (17) and Luke Desave (14 not out) helped Wellington close to the 200 mark before being dismissed for 197.
Luke Desave and Jack Beal opened the bowling for Wellington and both made an early breakthrough supported by good catching by Arron Campbell and Ben Evett.
This brought the dangerous Brockwell to the crease and making use of the short boundaries he made a quick 50 including 6 6s.
The spin twins of Campbell and Whitefield bowled well in tandem in the face of Brockwell’s onslaught and when Brockwell was caught at deep mid-wicket thanks to a good catch from Jack Beal Wembdon were 97-5.
However Trunks and Henry put paid to any hopes of a Wellington win with a 6th wicket partnership of 92.
With the game wrapped up by Wembdon, Alex Sparks and Robin Davies came on to pick up their first league team wickets, but Sellick saw Wembdon home with a six.
Despite a decent first half to the season, Wellington finished bottom of the WEPL Somerset Division and will play their cricket in the Somerset League’s Premier Division next time round.
This will be an opportunity for this young side to continue to develop with the aim of getting back into the WEPL structure in the very near future.
The players would also like to place their thanks on record to all the volunteers on and off the field at the club for their efforts through the season.
